Battle of the Ballroom Techniques

Having watched my fair share of ballroom competitions, I was interested to see how it was going to be represented. The 2 main leads represent each style to the tee - the controlling, precise ballroom lead & the passionate, out-of-control Latin lead. So opposite, but then attracted to each other. It's not a smooth path, & it can be confusing about what is going between them.Perhaps there were too many scenes showing the teaching of the ballroom methods. I would have liked to have seen more of the LL teaching the repressed BL to move his hips. The women were interesting. One was completely controlled by her ballroom partner. The other seemed to motivate the Latin lead to stop his self-destructive behaviour. You come to understand what the females have to go through with all the sequins, make-up, high heels & back-breaking moves. Also, the politics of the dance world are on display as they allude to the fact that Asians are not favoured to win any trophies. As always, money & connections seem to affect the results. The final dance scene brings some final resolution, but also leaves question to be answered.

Poetic. Now Do You Feel Like A Princess?

This film is beautiful right from the opening credits. The cinematography is amazing and the music sensual, rhythmic and a great soundtrack. The other vibe this film noir movie gives off is the mix of poetic dialogue, country western, Latin, classical music and manga feel when it's all mixed together. The song at the beginning is so sexy with the 1920s kind of vibe you know it's gonna be a fun ride and it delivers. "Become the finest man admired by all." It's sexy all over with a mysterious tension that leaves hoping for more.

Stunning Movement, Missing Closure

From the beginning, the film is stunning in how it uses dance to portray emotion - tension, rigidity, submission, control, and love - all expressed through movement rather than words. It also carefully establishes the importance of the audience, judges, and media commentary, making public perception central to the story. This is why the ending feels so disorienting. After the final dance and public kiss, the film offers no clarity: are they officially a pair for the 10 Dance final, is such a pairing even allowed, and how does the audience respond to what they have just witnessed? It feels like watching a dance competition where the decisive performance happens, but there are no results - no commentary, no reactions, no sense of winners or losers. The film is undeniably beautiful, but its pacing falters toward the end, and the abrupt conclusion unnecessarily erases the very elements it taught us to care about.
