Samson & Kelson, a love story

Danny Boyle's return to the world of the Rage virus, turned out to be a welcome one. Last year's journey into a quarantined Britain, penned by Alex Garland, offered unnerving scares, disgusting violence and thoughtful storytelling. Carried by stellar performances, 28 Years Later brought new life to this twist on the "Undead" genre. The final scene of that film however, gave it's sequel a steep hill to climb. Could The Bone Temple, solidify that bold, tonal shift of an ending, into a satisfying chapter of the Rage Virus story? Admittedly, I was a bit worried. I chose to set aside my personal wishes for this story and cast aside all expectations. Thankfully, I was rewarded with a courageous, insane and frankly, unhinged film.Jack O'Connell provides us with an unsettling villainous performance as Sir Lord Jimmy Crystal. The trauma his character has endured, is palpable. It's infected the entire narrative. All his actions and words, are drenched in the fallout of his past. The fragility of a child, the violent nature of a psychopath. Jimmy Crystal, is one of the most memorable villains in modern cinema.Ralph Fiennes couldn't put in a bad performance if he tried. His work as Kelson is a joy to behold. Kelson's interactions with Samson, an infected Alpha introduced in last year's chapter, are quite frankly delightful. Chi Lewis-Parry brings so much more to Samson's character than mere physicality. There's a softness and humanizing quality in his performance that elevated the entire proceedings.The Bone Temple is a special film. It takes the franchise further into a direction that many a fan wouldn't expect or maybe even want. However, it takes it's time with it's characters and story, without playing it safe. Garland makes bold choices and continues to create his vision without compromise. The Bone Temple isn't the film I expected or maybe even wanted. It turned out to be so much more.

The 28 Years Trilogy continues thriving!

I love how each 28 Days/Years movie focuses on different aspects and themes. This one involving cults, religion and philosophical elements added in with meaner, weirder and bolder ideas that keep things fresh. Danny Boyle's flair may not be present or the original music composers, but Nia DaCosta delivers her own flavour and take of a nicely shot and clean approach to the franchise's look and feel. It's also a much smaller scale movie than the previous ones, and that makes it way more focused and in my opinion far better paced and handled in most regards.This is a movie strongly handled by two powerhouse performances from Ralph Fiennes and Jack O'Connell. Alfie Williams is still great, and the lead Alpha Samson played by Chi Lewis-Parry really shines in bringing in a new and humane approach to the infected side of things. It's certainly taking risks and not as infected-heavy as previous titles, but I think of all the films so far this could potentially be the one I like the overall best, alongside 28 Days Later.8.5/10.
