More of the same

When I saw Katie Leclerc in the credits I was excited to see this movie. Unfortunately, Leclerc couldn't overcome the many shortcomings - overused plot devices, zero chemistry between the leads, pedestrian dialogue, and lack of any spark in the story. Also, movies from this network always seem to me to have distracting background music. Background music should be just that and not call attention to itself. There are so many overused themes and yet Christmas seems to be an afterthought. High school flames broke up hard. Emma is up for a new job far away. Family considering selling the family farm to developer. Baking contest and missing recipe ingredient. Small town good, big city bad.The conflict over the family business got heated souring the tone of the story. The parents seemed to be combative about it and Emma reacted strongly. All of this type of movie have an inevitable conflict or obstacle for the romantic leads. This one was a bit different from the norm but it was also very sour.Even so, watching Leclerc kept me in the game so to speak.

Sappy but cute

Huge reason I watched this movie is because of hearing about it wrapping up the last of filming months prior to it airing. I actually live in Wisconsin and I'm originally from the Door County area so I know a lot of the places where they filmed from the welcome sign to Sturgeon Bay to Fish Creek/Ephraim. So it was exciting to see a storyline take place within Door County, Wisconsin where I grew up, went to school and even worked at a few different jobs over the years.I thought it was incredibly sappy but cute throughout. I enjoyed the setting of the different locations, some of those places I've been in multiple times before. The romance plot wasn't the best, but the male was definitely good looking and between him and the female lead wasn't terrible acting but could have been better chemistry. The ending was a little rushed in her explaining things and choosing whether or not to stay. But overall the Christmas storyline and the cherry pie bake off gave it a warm cozy feel for the holidays. So if you want a cutesy Christmas movie that doesn't really make you think and is located in a genuine small town location but gets you in the holiday mood, then this might be up your alley.

This pie has no filling

This was a well made movie, and I couldn't wait for it to be over. The acting, particularly the leads, and direction were well above average. Sadly the story wasn't really that interesting or fun to watch. It's unfortunate that Calvin, the developer rep, was the one character that wasn't written very well. That hurt the story, because he played an important role. The story should have focused more on Emma's baking, the competition, and her competitors. That was the most interesting part of the movie. They could have then brought in the former boyfriend and the drama surrounding the sale of the orchard in small doses, adding complexity to Emma's otherwise fun story.Instead the romantic tension with the morose boyfriend emerges almost immediately, and the movie drags on as Emma's career dilemma occupies most of the running time. Ultimately it's just exhausting, and an unfortunate waste of talent. The lack of chemistry doesn't help either, especially with the ending, which seems unearned, and doesn't really work. There is a Christmas backdrop, but very little Christmas spirit. Watch if you want a melancholy two hours.C+
