Feel good Christmas spirit

7.9 stars.Overall 'A Christmas Prayer' feels nice. There are a few parts that got under my skin, but I suppose it's par for the course. It's the story of a single woman and a single father and his daughter. They "run" into each other several times (the fate trope). Eventually, they recognize each other. She accidentally spills coffee on his stuff and that's where the story unfolds.I don't want to spoil it, but suffice it to say this woman seems to be a real Christian lady, but she keeps a little secret, which is not very kind. She could easily have been honest from the start, but it's all convoluted. So we get swept up in the secret Santa (angel actually) of it all, and forget that she's being dishonest (even if cloaked in goodness and charity). The act that she commits is not really heinous, it's simply a bit of misdirection, but the way it turns out makes her look too shady for the good person she truly is; so it felt a bit uneven. The chemistry is good and the story is entertaining. All the characters are likable and the dialogue flows. 'A Christmas Prayer' met my pre-requisites for an excellent film, because all the pieces fit together to make a fun and emotionally fulfilling experience (in spite of the few tiresome aspects).Of course, per usual Hallmark style (actually Great American Family Network -- surprisingly more Hallmark than Hallmark in this case), his reaction to the fiasco was unsurprising. But since the movie was so good, I'll turn the other cheek -- don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth.

This is not your typical cheesy, trope-filled Christmas movie. This is hardcore faith-based sincerity throughout and exceptionally well-acted by just about everyone who has dialogue in this movie. Christopher Russell's usual handsome charm is edged with a sadness which he plays well. Shae Robins plays an understated heroine that continues to grow on you as the movie progresses. The holiday romance element is way underplayed here, although the suggestion is there from the beginning. This was more 'moving' than 'entertaining'. It was very well done, both in story writing and acting.

Prayer

This movie is very much about the Christian faith. It presents a very creative take on a subject that Christians discuss a lot but rarely if ever reach a totally satisfactory answer to: how does prayer work? The story has a very simple idea of at least part of the answer: Often Jesus uses other Christians to bring answers to the more everyday concerns. The main character, Natalie, finds the little girl's prayer list. She sees that none of her prayers are for herself and so Natalie takes it upon herself to answer each one.Implied, but never really voiced out loud in the story, is another part of the answer to the original question: prayer should be according to God's will, and as such, never selfish. (That's not to say it can't be for oneself, but not for selfish ambition or gain.)I was worried about how the secret would make Natalie appear to be a villain and that came up and then was dealt with nicely.Another theme in the movie is Wes still trying to deal with the loss of his wife and how that has affected his faith. The actors were good and the dialogue was good albeit not sparkling. Shae Robin has been in a couple of movies I've seen, but I didn't realize that while watching this movie. She does a nice job and I hope she does more of these for this network.I can't avoid pointing out some echoes of common secular tropes in Christmas movies. There are definite echoes of Natalie as a Secret Santa. Instead she is a Secret Angel. Natalie's boss acts like in many stories with an editor who wants to selfishly use a reporter's story in ways she didn't intend.I also want to contrast the way the two romantic leads come together with that in so many other Christmas romance stories. Instead of heated arguments or accusations, everyone acts kindly after the infamous spilling of the drink.I was glad the name of Jesus was used frequently and Natalie even prayed that outcomes would be used for His Glory.
