Plot summary

Needing money for her brother’s medical treatment, Liu Yazi agrees to become a surrogate mother for a mysterious benefactor. But when the contract is suddenly terminated, she disappears in a whirlwind, taking the unborn child and leaving former acquaintances, spurned lovers and secret admirers seeking her desperately.

Thoroughly unconvincing

The premise is ok, the pacing is ok, the acting is passable, but it's all kind of uninspiring, except that... the main thing, the real problem.......is that Yazi, our protagonist, who is meant to have captured the interest/hearts/curiosity or something, of several of the other characters is a completely uncompelling, selfish brat who makes some pretty distasteful decisions.Having such characters in a story is not the problem in itself. It's that in this case the audience is being asked to believe that anyone else would like them. There is no reason to. There is one long scene attempting I suppose to convey an angelic innocence, but scene is a real clash of style and tone with the rest of the film, and includes some pretty odd and creepy behaviour from a character who is very different in all other scenes. The attempt fails horribly by the way.I could not find a way in which any character would be drawn to her, and so when they are, it is just not convincing.Don't know how I watched it all.

Somewhat slow paced...

When I sat down to watch the 2013 Hong Kong movie "A Complicated Story", it was without ever having actually heard about the movie before. But my admiration for the Hong Kong cinema made me pick up the movie and give it a chance.As I wasn't sure what writers Kiwi Chow and Kei Shu had in store for me, I sat down to watch this movie with a clean slate and every chance of being entertained and bedazzled.However, I have to admit that the pacing of the narrative in this movie was a bit too slow paced and uneventful for my particular liking and preference of movie. So this movie was somewhat of a swing and a miss for me. As such, then the storyline just didn't really manage to capture my interest.There are some familiar faces on the cast list, if you are familiar with Hong Kong cinema. The movie has the likes of Jacky Cheung, Deannie Ip and Hoi-Pang Lo on the roster.My rating of of this 2013 drama lands on a three out of ten stars.
