Give Them A Chance

OK, Brandon Routh. Huge fan here. I bloody loved him in the Arrowverse (which had THE best John Constantine, by the way, and yes, your arguments are invalid), I totally enjoyed his Superman movie (not a popular opinion, I know, don't care), so... Yeah. Brandon Routh. What's funny here, though, is that I kind of... hate family movies? I mean, not FAMILY MOVIES family movies, but Christmas movies in which it's all about families. The thing is-families are complicated. Arguing is inevitable. And watching people arguing for the holidays? I don't know. I mean, if I wanted that, I can go see my own crappy family, right? Like I said, anything but a fan here. But guess what? A Keller Christmas Vacation kind of surprised me.I mean, yes, it's very typical (reality check-you're on Hallmark), it's very formulaic (again, it's that kind of channel), we all know how it's going, we all know how it'll end (Brandon's character will actually vocalize the whole formula here-everybody's getting on each other's nerves until things will actually get better because, obviously, Christmas Magic), but. First of all, the cast is likeable, and the characters are interesting enough. Brandon's character actually is the less interesting one, with the most interesting one being that of Jonathan Bennett. You may say that he's doing his usual gay thing (which, at this point, is getting old), but they actually added some sort of a mystery to it, which makes the movie more exciting.Another reminder-it's Hallmark. That means that all the developments, the twists, and mysteries included, are very silly and naive. But they're there, so it's worth mentioning. Finally, the family chemistry kind of works. I mean, they'll argue, but they'll be silly and funny like teddy bears, so you'll want to hug them. It's a little bit cringey, of course, but it's kind of... part of the charm. Remember how it was about the Geller family in Friends? It's that kind of stuff. Actually, wait. Geller, Keller... Is there something in it?Anyway, you've got the idea. For the non-Hallmark crowd, it's an instant no (as usual). But for the Hallmark audience? It's not a bad one. Not the must-see one, but a solid one. And since we didn't have lots of the good movies this year (at least at the point this movie came out)... It'll do. Just don't expect too much. Also, if, like yours truly, you don't like this kind of movies, give the Kellers a chance. Hallmark's signature aftertaste? They've got it.

It Gets You at Your Heartstrings

A KELLER CHRISTMAS VACATION I I There's so much corniness and predictability on display in A Keller Christmas Vacation but when a movie can tuck at your heartstrings the way this one does several times then all is forgiven. Maclain Nelson does an above average job at helming with beautiful cinematography and a winning cast who make it perfectly work. A joyous Christmas comedy.
