A beautiful and bold story held back by performances that never fully carry its emotional weight.

Kefas (Millo Taslim) lives in an orphanage together with his little sister. Due to the carelessness of their caretaker, his sister dies because she is not taken to a hospital in time. It later turns out that the caretaker also stole money from the orphanage. Kefas' trust in adults collapses completely. He buries it along with his sister. When Simon Ferdinan (Agus Wibowo) becomes the new caretaker, Kefas has no intention of making things easy for him. He does everything he can to push Simon away, to provoke him, to turn his life into a small personal hell. But it backfires. Simon does not engage. He is quiet, withdrawn and clearly fighting something much darker than Kefas' rebellion.Simon carries his own demons and they slowly beat him down. His silence is not strength but exhaustion and it ultimately drives him toward suicide. When the children of the orphanage realize what is happening, they race against time to save a man they have grown attached to. Kefas, who never processed the loss of his sister, refuses to lose another person. The question is whether he will act in time.A Letter to My Youth tells a beautiful and bold story. The idea of connecting an older man at the end of his emotional rope with children who are just starting their lives is strong and meaningful. That contrast works. The story is supported by a fitting and often beautiful soundtrack. Unfortunately, much of its emotional impact is lost because of the acting. The performances are not terrible, but they rarely carry the weight the story demands. Milo Taslim is the exception. As a brother, a troubled orphan and an angry kid masking grief with attitude, he hits every note. He feels real. The problem is that he feels alone in that. Several surrounding performances drift into awkward or unconvincing territory. Even Fendy Chow, who plays the adult version of Kefas, drops the ball when it matters most. The one moment that should have made this film linger fails to land.I am not deeply familiar with Indonesian cinema, but A Letter to My Youth clearly feels like a low budget film. Not in a bad way, but in a deliberate one. It carries all the traits of a modest independent production. A small cast, limited locations, restrained cinematography, and very little spectacle. The film relies on dialogue, silence and atmosphere rather than scale or technical bravado. It does not try to look expensive and it does not pretend to be.What matters here is intent. The film aims for intimacy and introspection. The budget seems invested in mood and care rather than visuals or set pieces. That is why it feels quiet, contained and emotionally focused. It is low budget in execution, but not careless or cheap. It feels more like a handwritten letter than a glossy postcard. Whether that works for you depends entirely on what you expect going in.

Just caught this one, and it's an easy 8/10 for me

The film delivers exactly what it promises and then some-tight pacing, standout performances especially lead actor/actress if you want to name one, and moments of genuine emotional weight that linger long after the credits roll. It's not flawless (a couple of plot threads feel a tad rushed), but the direction is confident, the visuals pop, and it hits that sweet spot between entertainment and substance. If you're coming of ages movies this is a must-watch. Highly recommend-left me thinking about it all evening. 8/10."

wholesome

Love the storyline and i love the way they're put a bible verses put bible verses in some scenes. Ngl it makes me a little "oh.. that hit me.."There is an intonation and body language of the actor that's a little bit...unnatural but yeah i think they're can be improve that. Overall i can enjoyed the whole movie.
