It Just Is What It Is

Saul Williams encounters Thamela Mpumlwana, a young soldier in the drug trade around New York City, just come from a bloody robbery. He tries to save the young man, risking his own life in the depths of a world he thought he has escaped from.Filled with poetry, occasional beautiful imagery, and moments of pathos, it nonetheless left me unengaged. I cannot tell you why. There is undeniable skill and even artistry in the way Charles Officer directed this film, the story is a telling one, the performances range from good to excellent. There is no single flaw I can point to, except that I didn't care. Watching it became a slog after half an hour, and it continued for another hour, with issues of survival and even the hope of a life free from the bad world shown in the movie at hand. This happens occasionally. Something about a movie fails to draw me in, when a piece of utter trash will command my attention. I suspect it is because every issue here is laid bare, every aspiration and every impediment is present on the surface, and there is no subtext for me to work on. I can watch all but the worst B western going "Ah, yes, it's another one in which the banker is trying to bankrupt all the ranchers so he can take over the valley, and that's the same rock at the Iverson Ranch they always shoot from that angle."But the B western makes no claim to art, to having something deeper and more pertinent to say. This one seems to aspire to more, and yet offers nothing except the question of survival for people who made bad choices (or charitably, were forced into them). My hopes are raised, I look for something deeper, something in the subtext. Yet like Oakland, there is no there there, nothing about pigeons on the grass to make me cry alas, or lackaday or whoop-di-doo. It's just another urban crime drama with someone trying to get out, and no well written line nor graceful composition will make any more of it. It just is: pigeons on the grass. Full stop.Or maybe I'm simply not in a mood to appreciate such things at the moment. That happens. But I think not.

A well done film [7.5 stars]

Reminded me of FRESH and Ghost Dog, while maybe not good as fresh, it's crafted nicely with concurrent flashbacks. It can be at times slow moving but it's an interesting plot that is well-acted by the cast and really good film. I'd say I'm not sure why IMDbers have rated it slow low but it's 'merica and that pretty much explains it.
