Axemas 2: Blood Slay is a disappointing follow-up to a solid short film

I recently watched Axemas 2: Blood Slay (2018) on Tubi. The storyline follows Sarah, a survivor from the first Axemas, who returns to the storage facility where she lost her friends and loved ones a year earlier. Unfortunately for her, a copycat killer is waiting-and eager to finish the job the original murderer couldn't.This picture is written and directed by John Ward (Zombie Rage) and stars Ashley Campbell (Human Zoo), Drew Marvick (Pool Party Massacre), Ben Stobber (Pretty Boy), and Tommie Vegas (The Trust).I actually enjoyed the first installment for what it was. It had some well-executed horror moments and fun practical effects. This movie is about twice as long as the original, but everything in it feels like a step down-the storyline, the dialogue, and even the kills come off awkward and rushed. The premise had potential, but reusing the same location, setup, and theme made it feel lazy. Overall, it plays like a rushed sequel. In conclusion, Axemas 2: Blood Slay is a disappointing follow-up to a solid short film. I'd score it a 3/10.

Axemas 2. Double the camp double the gore.

So one wouldn't think there was a lot room for additional story after the first installment of the Axemas franchise. I liked the first one and thought it was a solid professional effort from this new filmmaker, John Ward. However, my assumption in this case was wrong. John took the classic gore niche and elevated it to psychological thriller. We're not so much shaken by the abrupt shots as we are via the great performance via the lead actress, AshleyCampbell. One can almost feel the internal unrest throughout and while there are predictable plot points, the direction and acting keep you engaged throughout. And to give credit, there were a few surprises and dare I say some catchphrases worth repeating. After all, who does bring a flashlight to axefight?! If you have a half hour sit down and enjoy the ride that is Axemas 2.
