Plot summary

A teenage boy, raised by a mother who considers herself psychic, takes a bullied kid into his group of violent misfits. As the group’s troubles escalate toward life-threatening situations, an inner voice awakens in the boy and, with the help of his mother and his new friend, he manages to find his own path.

A Raw Glimpse Behind the Nordic Calm

This Icelandic film pulls no punches, offering a stark and unflinching look into the lives of troubled teenagers. You'll be struck by the raw authenticity of their struggles and the surprisingly brutal pockets of youth violence that simmer beneath the surface of a nation often lauded for its tranquility. What's even more remarkable is the powerful and believable portrayal of these complex characters by a cast largely comprised of acting newcomers - their performances feel genuinely lived-in. While Beautiful Beings is a compelling and expertly crafted piece of cinema that will undoubtedly stay with you long after the credits roll, its intense and at times disturbing nature makes it a film I appreciate for its artistry more than one I'd readily revisit. It's a potent and memorable experience, though perhaps a singular one.

One more way to act like we don't know "what's going on with our kids"

I imagined it's going to be like Gummo and Kids and in a way it is but it fails in one very important aspect: showing the kids' own corruption. See, Harmony Korine's beautiful beings are tragic because the conflict is within themselves. A conflict with the environment like in here is just romantic and unfortunately, rings false. These boys are practically the four musketeers. And I don't like it because it's just one more way to act like we don't know "what's going on with our kids".P. S. The clairvoyant mother is a very unnecessary detail and the final conflict from the sister's appearance onwards is badly developed.
