Outrageous, infuriating, shameful!

A woman who suffers a miscarriage is arrested, accused of murdering the child. Faced with this injustice, the deeply conservative judicial system devotes itself to injustice, all in the name of a backward morality that cares little for the truth. In this sense, the film effectively portrays oppression, both of the system and of the environments. The persecution of the lawyers, cast as villains by society, and the oppressiveness of the prison environment as well. The high prison walls are enormous and gray, and the framing deliberately avoids shots that reveal the ceiling, giving the sensation of being enclosed within endless walls. This type of framing is paired with tight shots in which all four walls imprison Belén, conveying the apparent inescapability of the situation.Belén's lawyers must, in their mission, seek evidence completely ignored by the court and confront the difficulties inherent in exercising the right to due process of law.The illegality of abortion exposes the crime of the state. Christian morality, distorted and intrusive within the state, and its perverse corruption of the rule of law. Truth matters little to the accusers, who are focused solely on perpetuating their ideals, to the point of invading private life and perpetuating theological fascism.

Powerful story

A film that shines a light on global debates around abortion and on how women's lives are dismantled in the limbo between public opinion and concrete action. In Argentina, Julieta (renamed Belén by the legal team to prevent her real identity from being exposed in the press) arrives at the hospital with abdominal pain and experiences a miscarriage. The case quickly draws police attention after a fetus is allegedly found in the bathroom, leading to testimonies from doctors, nurses, and hospital staff: professionals often accused by rape survivors of trying to dissuade them from accessing the abortions legally guaranteed.Belén's situation rapidly turns into a near-circus spectacle, fueled by ill-informed opinions, bizarre comparisons to canine pregnancies, to murderers, and the judiciary's deliberate decision to seal records in order to block her appeal. An urgent, challenging, and compelling story, even with its simple construction and the familiar dramatic devices common to courtroom narratives.

The movie "Belén" is an Argentine legal-drama about a woman who is unfairly put in jail after a miscarriage, showing the problems in the system and the fight for women's reproductive rights. The movie is based on real events in the Tucumán region that played a role in the fight that helped make abortion legal in Argentina. However, the movie doesn't fully deliver, highlighting yet another example of injustice and human rights problems. Director and co-writer Dolores Fonzi uses a lot of drama, spending much of the movie on the lawyer's personal struggles and her efforts to draw public attention to the case. This makes the actual case feel vague, leaving viewers with little information about the victim and the circumstances of her pregnancy. In short, "Belén" is an ok movie with little ambition, telling a story that lacks originality and personality.
