I actually saw this film on April 14, 2023 at the World Premiere sponsored by The Green Bay Festival at The Tarlton in Green Bay. It was a sold-out house. On hand for the Q & A after the film were Michael Neelsen, the director; Cal Monfils, Tom Monfils younger brother; Mike Piaskowski, one of the men convicted of killing Tom Monfils; and Steven Kaplan, a lawyer from Minneapolis, MN and recipient of Minnesota Innocence Project's 2015 Never Forgotten Award.The documentary focusses on a murder case that dominated the news in Green Bay, and really the state of Wisconsin, in the early 90s. A factory worker at the James River Paper Company in Green Bay was found dead at the bottom of a paper pulp vat on November 22, 1992. He had previously called in to a local police tip line about his fellow employees pilfering items from the mill.This call was recorded and held by the local authorities until somehow the police department accidentally released the tape to one of the six men who became defendants in what became a murder case. The case was not brought to trial until over two years after Monfil's death resulting in the conviction of "The Monfils Six" on October 28, 1995.This trial and the O. J. Simpson trial were nearly concurrent, with O. J.'s not guilty verdict coming on October 3, 1995. The Brown County D. A. John Zakowski mentions this in the documentary. Piaskowski then suggests that the jury may have been thinking that they were not going to let such a thing happen here (in Brown County). And they did not.The documentary revisits this case with vital information that has become available since the trial. There is much controversy surrounding the trial and it may very well be that what happened on October 28, 1995 was a miscarriage of justice. You will need to see it and decide for yourself, of course.The film itself is very well done with extensive interviews of key players in this real crime story. The difficulty of editing all of the information available down into a palatable 110 minutes was challenging for the director, to be sure. He said as much during the talk back. Mr. Kaplan told one story in particular during the Q & A that could have added another 30 minutes or more to the film, and that was just one other key player in the saga.The film will certainly whet your appetite for this story but may leave you hungry for more. Just as Netflix aired a documentary series about another Wisconsin murder case that lasted three years, from 2015-2018, this story could provide the same impetus for a similar series on the streaming platform. Sometime in May Beyond Human Nature will be available on demand. I encourage you to see it.

The Railroad of Justice

The production quality of this documentary is not great, but content and interviews are excellent. Very interesting story without a smoking gun conclusion. At the end of the day it all comes down to the probability of the evidence. Whether or not this burden of proof was objectively met remains an open question.It certainly seems like this case was mostly about optics, and the need to hold one or more people accountable for a sensational unresolved death, After watching this Documentary, it would be hard to believe the average viewer does not have some doubts about the guilt of the alleged perpetrators of this crime.Overall a tragic story, with a lot of victims, and no happy endings.
