A Gritty Entertaining Crime Gem

Blind Panic is a gripping Kiwi crime thriller set in the suburbs during a heatwave. Beneath the surface lie secrets: on one side of the street, Madeleine, a blind woman maimed by a past trauma; on the other, Louis, a desperate criminal on home detention, fully aware he's a sitting duck with his psychotic ex-boss Prescott on the hunt for some missing money.Despite its modest budget, the film delivers big thrills and standout performances, particularly from lead actors Erroll Shand and Jodie Hillock. It's a film with a tragic history. Raw, funny, and fiercely entertaining and is a testament to the strength of its writing and direction.Unapologetically grimy and politically incorrect, Blind Panic embraces its flawed characters and gritty tone. The 1992 setting adds texture, with chunky phones, clunky desktops, and a haze of cigarette smoke evoking a bygone era.New Zealand has produced few crime thrillers, but this one earns its place among the best. The filmmakers clearly drew inspiration from genre classics, including blind thrillers like Wait Until Dark and See No Evil.A real gem - well worth tracking down to watch.

Bland, generic and sort of boring...

Right, well I virtually had no idea what I was getting into here, as I opted to sit down and watch the 2025 thriller "Blind Panic". But it being a movie that I hadn't already seen was more than sufficient for me to opt to give it a fair chance."Blind Panic", as written by Matthew Mawkes and Mark Willis, proved to be a rather bland script. Sure, there was potential here, but ultimately, then the storyline failed to properly entertain me. And the movie felt most of all like a background movie, where you pay half-hearted attention to the audio only whilst doing something else.It wasn't as if the movie had a lot of familiar faces on the cast list. In fact, there was only a single familiar actor for me, and that was Simon Phillips. However, I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen when I watch a movie, so the fact that there wasn't an abundance of familiar talents was actually something that spoke in favor of the movie. It should be noted that the acting performances in "Blind Panic" were good. For a thriller then "Blind Panic" was mundane, bland and boring. There are far, far better thrillers out there in abundance, so this is hardly a movie that you should go out of your way to get to watch. And it definitely is not a movie that will find its way back to my screen a second time.My rating of director Mark Willis's 2025 thriller "Blind Panic" lands on a generous four out of ten stars.

Suspenseful Kiwi Suburban Thriller

Blind Panic is a solid, no-frills Kiwi thriller that delivers tension without trying to be bigger than it is. Set in 1992, the story follows an ex-con on home detention and his blind neighbour as a simmering criminal threat closes in. The performances are strong, especially the two leads, and the film does a good job using atmosphere and character rather than big action to build suspense. While the low budget shows at times, it works in the film's favour, giving it a gritty, grounded feel. Not perfect, but engaging and well worth a watch if you enjoy character-driven crime thrillers.
