A Documentary Should Offer Insight Into Its Subject

Bob Mackie is one of the most famous costume designers still living. That's mostly because in the 1960s through the 1980s, he was designing often outrageous and flamboyant costumes for Judy Garland, Carol Burnett, Cher, Mitzi Gaynor, Elton John John.... the list goes on. Costume design is considered an important part of film making. There's an Academy Award for it. Mackie has been nominated for it three times, although he has never won.The problem with this documentary is that it never really gives an idea of how he does what he does. Instead, we get a short documentary about Cher wedged into this film. It is not until 70 minutes of its 105 minutes that the film makers start to discuss Mackie. Even then, details about how he does what he does are sparse. We learn he is detail-oriented from the very beginning of each piece, and works constantly, unlike other designers, who seem to be less involved. Is this key? Is this important? Well, it's mentioned, so I guess it is. But it still offers little insight.

bit slow at first...then gets into his story

I had no idea he was the sketch guy for Monroe's dress. My family always looked forward to seeing The sonny and Cher/Cher show with her lovely dresses plus her songs were the highlight of the night. I was Looking forward to this documentary and was bored at first with him and two others in the car going to the Met and almost stopped watching. But be patient. Slowly the documentary delves into his fascinating life. The incredible work ethic, discipline, meticulousness of this man work and life will blow you away. Carol Burnett quotes that he designed absolutely everything in her show and that it amounted thousands of outfits blew me away. Then the contrast of discovering his grandaughter and her kids later in life living a normal life in a suburban home in Idaho is quite the contrast. Watch it. I plan to buy his book for my B-day.
