Meh...

Needless to say that I had never even heard about this 2026 thriller titled "Broken Bonds", from writer Jhayla Mosley and director David Y. Chung, prior to stumbling upon it by random chance. And given the fact that it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I needed no persuasion to check it out and give it a fair chance. The storyline in "Broken Bonds" was pretty straightforward, though it was hardly an overly interesting narrative. The contents of the script were somewhat generic and bland, and that ultimately made it a somewhat mediocre viewing experience. I can't help but sit here with a sense of 'what was this really about?' as the movie came to an end.I have to say that with "Broken Bonds" being a thriller, it was frightfully devoid of any thrills or excitement. This was a drama with light thriller elements at best. The acting performances in "Broken Bonds" were fair. I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, which was something that spoke in favor of the movie.Watchable, but nothing outstanding or overly memorable to be found here. And most definitely not a movie that warrants more than a single viewing. My rating of director David Y. Chung's 2026 movie "Broken Bonds" lands on a rather generous four out of ten stars.

Tubi, or not Tubi

Broken Bonds tells the story of three bartenders who get involved in a fatal shooting outside their bar. Its mega-low budget is felt, but a competent screenplay makes this one of the stronger Tubi Original movies. The issues with this film are too significant to make it a strong recommendation. First, the acting is uneven and well below par. Many side characters are miscast and/or played very poorly (the bar owner, the landlord, and the lead investigator) which makes it hard to believe them as characters. I think they could probably have used more takes to hone the dialogue. Any scenes with action are also a tough watch. Also the film looks like it was shot with an iPhone in most scenes. There is some good and dynamic shots for it what it is but you can again tell its budget through the camera. The screenplay, however, is actually quite good. Granted, I went in with Tubi Original expectations, but there were multiple moments where a character's actions genuinely surprised me in a good way. One character in particular is set up as a B-movie stereotype pseudo villain and ends up having believable depth and being written intelligently. The plot moves at a reasonable clip, and I cared enough about the characters to enjoy it. The dialogue is often pretty terrible, and one character repeats her motivation at least ten times, as if the audience is going to forget it. The third act is weak, likely due to budgetary restrictions, but it was an enjoyable film overall. It's hard to give this a strong recommendation due to its myriad issues, but I enjoyed the movie for what it was. It's not what I'd put on for movie night with the family, but it's a decent watch on a Tuesday.
