Plot summary

When an over zealous scientist pushes his experiments with string theory too far, his brane explodes. That's "brane", not "brain", meaning someone has to sort out the mess he has created. Corey Harlan is sent in – kicking and screaming – to find the heart of the brane and its creator.

Low Tech/Low Budget SF Shocker

Bulk: A branestorm, not a misspelling, you need some knowledge of string theory to understand Ben Wheatley's latest film or maybe you don't. Going back to basics and made on a low budget, filmed on mobile phones and VHS cameras, some of the scenery is reminiscent of early Dr Who and Blake's Seven. Indeed one of the characters comments on how carboardy the surroundings are and then picks up a card hut which is supposed to be in the distant background. Good use is also made of Airfix models. Hoarders of doppelgangers overrun the action as a house is adrift in the middle of chaos in the aftermath of a strange explosion. It all seems to be the fault of an Elon Musk type character. People go through the same cycle of actions again and again, but some iterations show differences. It's impossible to adequately summarise or even review this noir thriller/SciFi BMovie/Post Apocalyptic Journey/RomCom. Best appreciated by Wheatley fans. Written, Edited and directed by Ben Wheatley, 7.5/10.It.will eventually be shown on Film4, from March 2026 you may but it on Blu ray from Rook Films.

You can do it too

An incredible piece of DIY filmmaking. It needs to be experienced to be believed. Draws heavily from movies by David Lynch and from sci-fi classics such as The Matrix or Dr Who. Probably the most efficient use of a small budget I have ever seen. I'd definitely recommend it to any aspiring filmmaker, so they can discover what can be achieved with easily accessible tools.
