Plot summary

Chang, a 16-year-old, Asian American, bets the high school basketball star that he can dunk by Homecoming. The bet leads 5' 8" Chang on a quest to learn to dunk—not only to impress his crush, Kristy, but to gain the respect of his high school peers too. But before he can rise up and truly throw one down, he'll have to reexamine everything he knows about himself, his friendships and his family.

Disney movie with ESPN

Chang is a basketball-obsessed high school student. He falls for new student Kristy, but Matt is also interested. Matt is a former grade school friend who turned into the arrogant basketball star jock. Matt uses all his powers to belittle Chang. In frustration, Chang bets that he can dunk.I don't completely love Chang. It would be better if he's more quiet and less of a spaz. I don't hate him. I just don't love him. I like Kristy although she should hold off being with Chang until he does something for her. That may require her to friend-zone him initially. I don't know if I like the dunk premise. A better one would be to challenge Matt one-on-one. The ESPN people threw me off for a second. This is a marginal underdog story.

The film made me feel something, so props for that.

Far from perfect, though 'Chang Can Dunk' manages to leave a mark.Its plot is told in quite a heavy-handed manner, while the pacing and acting (cast are likeable, mind) isn't all that noteworthy. However, bits of the story do have a decent tinge of sadness attached to them, particularly with Chang and his mother, Chen. The film made me feel something, so props for that.I don't have much more to say about it. Not a great movie, but one that manages to make itself work - at least it did for me./////// I watched this on Twenty-Sixth of July Twenty-Twenty-Four on Disney's Disney Plus service.

He doesn't dunk...

Until the very end and it is only assumed he made the dunk so does that leave room for a part 2? First Jack Harlow can't dunk as a white man and then this high school 5'8 Chinese kid can? Nope. Stereotypical movie lacking jokes and the xenophobia continues even though the movie was written and directed by a Chinese native in Jingyi Shao. Dexter Darden as Deandre was the only pleasant light (get it) within the movie but I am curious as to how he went from a teenager in Saved by the Bell to a full grown unrecognizable man in this film. Anyways, how did this movie get a PG rating with use of curse words? Oh well, don't recommend and won't watch again.
