Surprisingly enjoyable...

Needless to say that I had never even heard about this 2025 action comedy titled "Cop & a Half" prior to stumbling upon it by sheer random chance. And given the fact that it was a movie that I hadn't already seen, of course I opted to give it a fair chance.Writers Jonathan Boynton-Lee and Meren Reddy put together quite a nice surprise of a storyline and script. This movie was sort of in the spirit of "Lethal Weapon". And I have to admit that I was genuinely entertained by the narrative that the writers put together.Given my very, very limited exposure to the South African cinema, of course I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And as it was, that was actually a good thing that spoke in favor of the movie, as I enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in the movie were good.There is a fair amount of action in the movie, which is mixed with a good doze of comedy as well. And that made it quite enjoyable to sit through. If you enjoy action comedies, then I definitely recommend this movie.My rating of director Mq Ngubane's 2025 movie "Cop & a Half" lands on a six out of ten stars.

Silly yet not funny enough!

A cop ends up losing a key witness in a case and ridiculed by his colleagues as well as the Police Captain. He is tasked with baby sitting an annoying police informant. Meanwhile Busi and her boys are looking after the drug business along with Lady T. Their plan is thwarted at a club by the unlikely duo irrespective of their differences. They go undercover to catch Busi but it ends up with a biggest drug bust without the main culprits being caught. What happens when the real boss of Busi and Lady T shows up to target the cop responsible? How does the unlikely partners tackle them, forms rest of the story.It was an unique experience to watch this South African film which was definitely ambitious and sticks to this particular genre's template. There is the tough cop who doesn't gell well with others and he gets to babysit the most annoying informant. The humor too is predictable and somewhat slow. As much of it were recycled jokes, I couldn't help get tired by it sooner. The villains too has a set of buffoons as they deliver the slapstick humor but those scenes lacked the energy. The humor too ranges from generic to quite weird but the third act out of nowhere takes a dark turn which was completely unnecessary for this film. It's an outright silly film that may look fresh as a South African film but the fun factor remained low.

Entertainment from start to finish

What a great dopamine hit! Cop and a Half is proudly South African and pure entertainment. From the opening scene, I was laughing, cringing, and completely pulled in. The humor is sharp, the stunts are believable, and the chemistry between the cast feels effortless. It's smart, bold, and unafraid to lean into real South African nuances, which makes it stand out even more. My only criticism is that it ended too soon. Here's hoping the sequel comes quickly.
