Characters just don't act like real people

The opening of the movie is very well done, very engaging. But once it transitions into the present day, the movie just becomes an essay on the challenges of being an American-born Korean. That's a fine topic to explore but it's not an excuse to forget the other important parts of filmmaking. Like dialogue. Almost every line of dialogue in this movie is used to establish the type of Korean a character is, either a "true" Korean or a "whitewashed" one. The first gathering of Korean characters we see is them literally asking each other which stereotypes they fit just so we learn where the divide is. Everything the main character's parents say and do is to make sure we know they aren't "traditional" Koreans. Meanwhile, the main character's roommate does nothing in the movie but judge her for not being Korean enough. One last pet peeve, the main character has a leak directly over her bed that she doesn't even try to get fixed. The leak is an obvious metaphor so it's important it stays there getting bigger but at least gimme a scene with a phone call saying the repair is delayed or something. All that said, it's well made from a technical standpoint and not a total waste of time. It's good for a like Sunday early afternoon watch.

It was adequate...

Without knowing what I was in for here, aside from it being a horror movie, and the little information shed by the movie's synopsis, I opted to sit down and give this 2026 Tubi produced movie a chance.Writer Regina Kim put together a fair enough script that mixed Korean supernatural horror with Western horror. It is a nice mixture of cultures and the end result proves to be enjoyable and entertaining.I was actually not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list, and that was actually something that served the movie well. I do enjoy watching unfamiliar talents on the screen when I watch a movie. The acting performances in the movie were good.It is not a movie that utilizes much of any special effects, so don't get your hopes up for that.My rating of director Réi's 2026 movie "Death Name" lands on a five out of ten stars.

Watch Something Else

I like Tubi. Especially on my computer where the offerings have no commercials. Many good movies are available there for streaming. Tubi's own productions however, can be a mixed bag. "Death Name" was in the bottom of that bag.Other than Grandma, the acting was pretty bleak. Especially Ms. Keum whose "acting" consisted of making lots of faces, almost a new one for each word. Woo was tolerable as the over-the-top romantic interest, but his turn to evil was bland. And the dialog must have been written by AI, as no real people talk so stilted. It took very little time to realize this was a low budget made for TV movie, but I hung in hoping for better. And hoping Sophie would finally get that drip fixed.
