An authentic and refreshing coming-of-age story

I caught DJ Ahmet at the film festival in Herceg Novi, and it left me thinking about it long after the credits. What stood out most were the performances. Most of the actors had no previous experience, yet it never showed in a negative way. In fact, it made the whole story feel natural and authentic, like we were watching real lives unfold rather than a cast putting on a show.It is a coming-of-age story, but told differently. The North Macedonian backdrop gives it real weight, especially when questions of religion and custom come into play. That clash between tradition and change gives the film a unique emotional edge. The imagery stuck with me too, especially the pink sheep as a metaphor for being an outcast. Just as people talk about a black sheep being the odd one, this twist on it really resonated with me.Overall, DJ Ahmet is a heartfelt, original take on growing up, identity, and belonging.

Familiar tale of coming-of-age, music, and traditions

Watched at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival.DJ Ahmet doesn't hold anything ground breaking about the bonds of father and son and the whole theme of being yourself despite being in a conservative society. Yet, it's visual camerawork, strong lead performance, and ambitious direction approach still offers a nice and cute observation of growing up, music, and trying to be the person you desire rather what society tells.Provided with some good production and costumes, the simple nature environment offers a nice style and easy going experience. North Macedonia culture is very interesting and the movie offers a solid insight to the people, culture and background. Including some solid dance sequences and music. While the simple narrative doesn't offer anything new and some of the bad lightening and aimless tone doesn't fully work, at the end of the day, it's a simple delightful story.

Vibrant Beats, Big Emotions

DJ Ahmet is one of the most cheerful and heartwarming films to come out of IFFK 2025. Beneath its funny and entertaining surface lies a story that questions societal norms, traditions, and rules in a way that feels light yet meaningful. The film never takes itself too seriously, but its emotions and message come through beautifully. At its core, DJ Ahmet is a celebration of human connection and individuality. The lead character and his brother share a wonderful bond that gives the story plenty of warmth and humor. Their chemistry feels real and touching, while the supporting cast also shines with lively and convincing performances, adding depth to the film's colorful world. The technical side of the film stands out just as much. The cinematography is vibrant and full of energy, capturing both the emotional beats and the fun spirit of the story. The editing has a youthful rhythm that keeps the pace engaging from start to finish. The soundtrack is one of the best heard at IFFK this year-fresh, emotional, and perfectly matched to the film's mood. It's no surprise that DJ Ahmet received some of the loudest applause at the festival. It's a film that entertains while quietly inspiring, showing that joy and thoughtfulness can coexist beautifully on screen.
