A Quiet, Honest Love

I watched Do You Love Me? When it screened at the Gothenburg Film Festival, and it stayed with me in a quiet, persistent way. Years later, while compiling a personal list of films about love, I realized how vividly I remembered this film emotionally, even though I could not immediately name it again. What I remembered was not a plot, but a feeling. Kyiv around the end of the Cold War. A young woman from a well-off family at acting school. Emotional distance inside the home. Drifting, sadness, pills. A relationship with an ambulance driver. Leaving, returning. The film existed in my memory more as a lived experience than as a story outline. At the center of it is a young woman who is still deeply comfortable in a kind of child state. She is naive, sheltered, and emotionally unprepared for real life, not in an exaggerated way, but in a very believable one. She does not yet know what adulthood actually demands of her. In that sense, the film is a coming-of-age story, but not a sentimental one. Growing up here means being forced to experience things she has no language for yet, and no protection from. One moment that stayed with me in particular is a scene in class where she is supposed to fake laughter. She tries, but she cannot do it. The sadness of her real life keeps breaking through the performance. It is a small scene, but it captures the entire film. The gap between what is expected of her and what she is actually capable of feeling in that moment is devastating.I was surprised by how difficult it was to rediscover the film through searching, even when I remembered so many concrete details. I tried detailed searches, advanced tools, and even AI, combining every element I could recall, but nothing surfaced. The only reason I eventually found it again was because I had added it to an old IMDb list when I first saw it.That experience says something about the film itself. Do You Love Me? Is not loud or declarative. Its power lies in interiority, atmosphere, and emotional restraint. It does not explain itself or summarize its meaning for you. That makes it deeply affecting, but also easy to overlook in a world that favors clear hooks and easy descriptions.Once I found it again, I was reminded how much I wish more people had the chance to see it. Not because it is comforting, but because it feels honest. It captures love, longing, and emotional inheritance in a way that feels specific to its time and place, yet deeply human. This is the kind of film that stays with you quietly. Even when its name fades, the feeling does not.

I just couldn't

I tried to give this Ukrainian movie the benefit of doubt, but it caved in to the typical cliched nonsense and predictable coincidental meet-ups that bring with it gratuitous sex scenes that resemble two people suffering an epileptic fit.And the same song keeps playing no matter whether it's her cassette deck or car stereo. So the sound editor needs a better choice of samples to choose from.I couldn't make it to the half-way point before shutting this one down and moving onto a drama of substance and not gratuitous BS to pad the run time.So a two out of ten for trying to put together a sensitive plot driven drama, which quickly descended into the realm of cliched melodrama with little to chew on.
