A local Must watch!

Absolutely loved this movie. It was worth the watch. Great acting and a very interesting storyline. It was not boring or predictable. I had lots of laughs and seriously found a liking to Shannon Esra. She played the role of Sondra with such grace and humor which is amazing as her character would not look good on paper. It didn't have any American or International references and kept everything local and relatable. I'd recommend this movie to anyone looking for a chilled movie with some good laughs and heartfelt moments. Truly one of the good local movies on TV right now. It feel like I need to know what happens next in Sondra's life...perhaps there will be a 2?! ?

fun one from s africa

From joh-burg. Carla and sondra have always been best buds. They do everything together. Sondra used to be on a soap opera years ago, and she still gets recognized in public. It's sondra's 40th birthday, and suddenly, just everything is going wrong. The only thing that was still going right was her friendship with grant. But after a huge misunderstanding, now carla and grant are both mad at her. Can she fix all this? It's funny. You can tell the actors are all just having fun making this! Good story, great casting, acting, and direction. Good chemistry. Really fun film....kind of like watching kath and kim!

Funny and Brutal

One of the worst problems in romcoms is the 'quirky' heroine - inevitably a perfect person with one or two so called flaws introduced just to make her more relatable. In contrast, Sondra, the protagonist here, is flat out terrible. She seems self obsessed and self deluded at the same time - it's a tribute to the lead actress's skill and charm that she makes Sondra somewhat likeable or atleast someone you can root for.I also liked the relationship between Sondra and Carla, low-key toxic though it is. Like a real life friendship, they love each other deeply but loathe each other at times. They feed into each other's energy and are similarly self obsessed - it was interesting to me that Carla forgives Sondra so fast, because I think the director wanted to show that they are each other's companions and sisters for life. Their relationship is flawed but strong.There are many things the director's underlined in the film - how letting go and planning your life afresh after a certain age is difficult, parental anxieties and tantrums, how temporary fame can spoil your life in the longterm. There's a vulnerability in the underlying message. I wish they had not gone through the compulsory happy ending but shown how Sondra accepts her life instead. I think the idealized ending took away from the impact of the film somewhat.
