Plot summary

"Dog Jack" is the story of a slave boy and his dog who escape the master's plantation, join the union army, and have to face their former master on the battlefield. The story is inspired by the historical true-life adventures of the beloved mascot of the Pennsylvania 102nd, who was so prized by his regiment for his skills in battle that he was twice exchanged for a Confederate prisoner of war.

Highlights Important Aspects of the Civil War

The movie Dog Jack is a good movie for kids to have a more extensive background knowledge on the Civil War. By using the true story of Pennsylvania 102nd's mascot (which is a dog and everyone likes dogs)it helps takes on the topic of slavery and how life on the battlefield was. Even though it doesn't show any gruesome aspects of war it shows the lack of supplies and dangers. Furthermore, it helps to show the roles younger boys and African Americans played during the Civil War. Also, by showing Jed(runaway slave) and Jack's life on/escape from the plantation it shows the gruesome aspects of slavery and why many blacks joined the Union army to fight. Overall, it was an interesting movie even though the acting wasn't the best and some parts were very predictable.

Great Story Completed on a budget

This was a great story, but it was damaged by the budget of the film. The film plays out more like a low budget reenactment of the Civil War than a film. This would be a great film to remake as a blockbuster Hollywood film. For what this film is, it is okay. There are a lot of things that could have been done better, but it is not the worst film ever. The story is a redeeming quality. The primary problem of the film is the slow moving nature of the film.
