Eclipse

Presented at the inquest, twin brothers Tom and Geoffrey aka Big G (both played by Tom Conti) have gone sailing during an Eclipse and Big G has fallen overboard and drowned - it's deemed an accident. Later Tom visits Big G's now alcoholic wife, Cleo (Gay Hamilton) and their young son Giles for Christmas. Here Tom's relationship with Big G and exactly what happened start to get analysed in more detail.A strange and rarely seen film with a terrific performance by Tom Conti (what an eclectic film career he's had). It is though rather tricky to pin down. Clearly the spirit of Big G hangs over the perfectly pleasant, if occasionally rather odd, festivities. Here, Cleo seems keen to use her brother in law as a target for all manner of things on her mind, including of the course, his possible responsibility for the 'accident'. Whilst all is quite intriguing, even gripping and just occasionally uncomfortable, it's difficult to pin down what exactly this is trying to say. Is it a drama about loss, the rivalry between the brothers and what binds them or are there even supernatural elements It's hard to say plus underpinning all - was it truly an accident or a murder, although the slightest scintilla of a hint comes at the end. Whatever, Conti is impressive and it's never boring.
