A High-Voltage Premise, Grounded Too Soon

Certain things predispose me to like a film - such as using a fantastical premise to explore very down-to-earth concerns. Others have the opposite effect, like watching that same premise be quietly abandoned once it has served its narrative purpose. The oft-cited comparison between Lucia Puenzo and David Cronenberg only holds at a superficial level. While both mix the organic and the psychological, the Canadian filmmaker's ideas are far more unsettling - and far better exploited. In Electrophilia, a young woman struck by lightning develops a strange attraction to electricity and joins a support group of people who have survived similar incidents.Beyond the faint aura of oddness this setup casts over the film, don't expect much in the way of genuine "electrophilic" exploration. Had Ada been hit by a scooter or attacked by a llama, the story would land in much the same place: this is primarily about a woman whose life-changing accident forces her to reassess her interests, values, family, relationship, and connection to her own body.Which is to say, a film I probably wouldn't have gone out of my way to watch had it not dangled its intriguing hook - particularly since Electrophilia was never positioned as "the South American film of the year".

Typical

One of the main reason that I have limited my exposure to weakly written foreign films. I can always see that there will be glaring flaws in these films whenever female nudity is brought into play. And the oh so tiring old white guy younger woman fake forced sexual encounters that are used to pad the run time and cover up the apparent weakness of the script.Nope, not wasting my time with such drivel.

Without even seeing a trailer, Electrophilia caught my attention quite immediately. Lichtenberg scars have always been a fascinating sight. These are the lightning-like patterns that appears on the skin after a person has been struck by lightning. They are intricate, delicate and one could also say, quite beautiful.Electrophilia is a character-based drama that delves into the question of existentialism. Ultimately Ada takes a path of self-rediscovery and experimentation after her accident, and this leads to a hot affair with a doctor who shares a similar experience to her own.Electrophilia comes highly recommended for it's originality alone.
