What what heck was this...?

Right, well another movie that I had no idea existed prior to sitting down to watch it here in the beginning of 2026. All I knew about it, was what little information was shared by the synopsis, and the fact that it was a French horror movie. Now, the fact that it was a non-English movie was not an issue for me, as I watch movies from all over the world, and the fact that it was a horror movie that I hadn't already seen, nor actually ever heard about, just helped sweeten the deal.The movie starts out nicely enough, and there are some nice moments where you don't know what is going on. But as the movie progressed, it just became weirder and weirder, and I have to say that the narrative had me slipping from its grasp, as I didn't really enjoy the turn of events, as it made no sense, and just seemed far too random. So writers Alice Butaud, Thibault Emin and Emma Sandona failed to deliver a wholesome experience that properly entertained me.Given my extremely limited exposure to the French cinema in general, then I wasn't familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. Not that it was something that spoke against the movie in any way, not at all, because I do enjoy watching new and unfamiliar talents on the screen. The acting performances in the movie were good, though I have to say that I struggled to like the Cass Nozychka character, played by Edith Proust.The effects in "Else" were good, no doubt about that. But good effects can only do so much when the narrative is lacking.I am sure that there is an audience out there for a movie such as "Else", as it definitely is not a mainstream movie in any way. I just happened to find the movie to be far too strange and bizarre, and thus didn't enjoy it and struggled to sit through the 102 minute runtime.Hardly a movie that I will ever return to watch a second time, as I struggled enough with it the first time around.My rating of director Thibault Emin's 2024 movie "Else" lands on a rather generous three out of ten stars.
