fair perspective

I love this version first for beautiful work of Thierry Godard as Charles Bovary. Second, for fair portrait of woman condition in XIX French century. Not the last, for the inspired trip between trial and novel. Not great but correct at whole film , gentle crafted, careful exploration of the essence of a masterpiece, proposing a nie perspetive about a so familiar story and its characters.

Madame Bovary, c'est moi

"Madame Bovary, c'est moi", Flaubert is supposed to have said. He defends her ferociously at the trial for offense to public morality and religion, with which he and his editors are charged. Unfortunately we see little of the actual trial and more reenactments of key scenes from the novel, so the real life trial is used more as a framing device for the movie. In the end I didn't mind it that much after I resigned myself to the structure. It results more into an adaptation of the novel interrupted by a critique of the events during the trial, so we sort of get live commentary as the story unfolds. So I guess it was a refresher of the novel for me and it was good cause I don't think I ever watched a period drama adaptation of it. It was a novel I always had a strange relation to. I read it too young (around 15, something like that, as part of the optional biography at school) and never really understood it at that age and also it was in the nineties so 15 year-old me was very different from 15-year olds nowadays. I never got Emma and I was almost as critical of her as some of the people in this movie are. I hated how reckless and naive she was and how she sunk deeper and deeper into debt. I didn't even remember how it ended. So thanks French TV for that cause I know I will never touch the book ever again anyway.Still not a fan of Emma but I can try to understand her and sure, "la condition de la femme" in the nineteenth century was appalling. Emma was young and had her head filled with romantic notions and was trapped into a very disappointing marriage and made all the wrong choices. Her fate was tragic and we should feel sympathy for her. I know at the time I felt sympathy for Charles. I still do in a way.
