Swings for the fences

"Perversions are never what they seem to be."Erotic drama, but make it arthouse, and make it actually about feminism. The real "perversions" aren't sex kinks after all, they're the mental health issues women suffer because they're contorting themselves to live in a man's world, often boxed in by stereotypes. But if you are here for carnality, never fear, there is a goodly dose of nudity and sex as well, often involving but certainly not limited to Tilda Swinton. Here it seems less about empowerment and more about desperately trying to fill a void, and director Susan Streitfeld often emphasizes that with a rather jarring (and irritating) soundtrack. There are many markers of unease related to male behavior for the protagonist, a lawyer (Swinton), including the male gaze early on in the courtroom, the denigrating inner voices despite her success, the flashbacks to trauma, and the governor asking her why she's never married during an interview for a judgeship (grrr). We also get her sister (Amy Madigan) who is a kleptomaniac, her mother (Marcia Cross) who was abused, and a teenager who self-harms, though these things really aren't fleshed out very well. All of it had potential, but the way the story was told was patchy to say the least, and the surreal bits with the rope and pool felt amateurish. Lastly, and it pains me to say it, I thought Swinton's performance was uneven and occasionally wooden too, undoubtedly not helped by a weak script.

Lousy captions

The captions are all over the place and logical and un understandable. They are so jarring it's hard to keep track of what's going on.Part of one character's words blend right into the other characters words so that it's totally illogical. This is particularly difficult for people who are hard of hearing.
