With the Sight Slightly Off

When I faced the sometimes daunting task of deciding which movie to watch, I remembered I had this option on my pending and available list. The combination of nationality (Argentina offers many interesting choices), the length (around 80 minutes), and the thriller label was all I needed to convince myself that Gatillero was the best alternative. A film that promised what many of us look for, and what I would define as well thought out entertainment. While I recognize how risky it can be to watch films without knowing practically anything about them, sometimes it's possible to get it right. That said, I don't know how long it took me to realize I was watching a film without cuts. A single long take which, as often happens when that technique is used, gives the story a dynamism that in this case is very welcome. The movie is one of those that grabs you practically from the first minute. It was a pleasant surprise, even though it took me a little while to get used to its frenetic pace. In that sense, and throughout the entire runtime, Gatillero more than delivers on what I mentioned earlier-at least on the entertainment side.A major plus is that the film is quite immersive. It feels like it lasts for hours. While this might seem like a flaw, it's actually one of its qualities. That perception of being much "longer" probably comes from the fact that we chase, and are chased alongside the protagonist without respite, until a finale that in some way redeems the "greyhound."Another aspect I struggled a bit with was the slang, which is very local. It's understandable, but it requires effort. However, the main reason behind my six is that the film felt somewhat more implausible and exaggerated than it initially seemed. The same goes for the neighbors' reaction, which, while it may aim to be cathartic, struck me instead as caricatured and rather unrealistic. In the end, this weighs down the experience a little, and only a little, because I still say the film deserves to be recommended and considered, which is no small thing.

Gatillero is a bold experiment in real-time storytelling, shot in a single continuous take that plunges viewers into the chaotic world of Isla Maciel. While the technical prowess is undeniable - director's seamless long take immerses you in the tension - this Argentinian thriller struggles to fully captivate. The plot follows Pablo "El Galgo" Correa, a former hitman (played with grit by Sergio Podeley), as he's drawn back into crime. The moral complexity and systemic corruption are compelling in concept, but the execution feels uneven. Some scenes meander, and character depth takes a backseat to the film's ambitious structure. Still, it's a valiant effort that deserves praise for pushing boundaries.A 6/10 that's more fascinating than flawless.
