Dan The Man!

Ghosts Of Christmas Past (2021) -This was probably the best Made For TV Christmas film that I've seen so far this year, because there have been some doozies!Although it still basically stuck to the usual girl meets boy formula it did it in an up to date way that was fun and different enough to stand out. Admittedly there may be those of an older generation or less tech savvy mindset that would struggle to understand some of the terminology (My Mother had to ask me what IRL meant (In Real Life) and what a Blinky was (Pac-Man character)) but I'm sure that they could still make it through happily enough.Ellie (Annie Clark) was a serial Ghoster (She didn't respond to texts/messages from guys she'd been talking to online and even stood some up) but a reading from a fortune teller said that if she didn't apologise to all of them by Christmas Eve she would never find true love. Now it was slightly hard to believe that anyone would take that seriously or bother to fix it because if you were the sort of person capable of doing that you probably wouldn't have ghosted in the first place but, as I said, the idea was at least a bit different. As she went through the process of correcting her ways she also paired up with the gorgeous, luscious haired Charlie (Dan Jeannotte) to create a new video game and although he was a bit camp at times I really liked his cool, laidback character and he was obviously really in to Ellie. She didn't seem to have been so easily charmed by him though. It was going to take a big moment of realisation on her part to see that she'd had someone amazing right in front of her all along. If I'm honest I did struggle to connect with her at the start although she grew on me towards the end, but I felt that was more familiarity than a particular liking for her because she was quite abrasive and not totally likeable. I thought that if/when she did get together with Charlie that he would be the one doing the work to keep the relationship alive, while she was always working. She came across as a bit self important as if she was the only one who knew what hard work was and she clearly didn't think much about others, her Mother for example. And it was odd that she loved Christmas so much but was working through the office party. She did have a lot of nice jumpers though. There weren't any really bad actors in this film which was a hugely refreshing change from some of the others of the genre that I've seen this year. They all delivered very nicely and although Rhonda (Lynne Griffin) was a bit larger than life, it did fit her Fortune Teller character. I might have brought her back throughout the film to drop nuggets of wisdom or even just at the end to wink in a knowing way to Ellie and Charlie at the Christmas Market but it wasn't totally necessary.I would say that it was probably for the best that Ellie ghosted Kevin (Joey Belfiore) and Nate (Tony Tran) who were both a bit gay and more likely to end up with each other. I do know that the modern man is not necessarily meant to be as concerned with such things, but there have been times when these fellas have clearly been wrong for the girl (Jonathan Bennett) for instance) and that has made it less believable. That was why Mr Jeannotte's camp moments took me out of the story a little bit.Even though there were a couple of odd choices at times (A guy doing a blog on Pretzels for one) I did feel like this was one was better produced and written for the most part. The production elements didn't feel cheap at the very least. The style and journey was sweet as well as the idea being different enough to carry the usual formula even if it was a bit too obvious who Blinky4Life would end up being. My only other note was that I wasn't sure an Ouija board was a good choice as background decoration for the fortune teller.I would be happy to watch this one again for its magic and his charm. I'm afraid that if you get the right guy in these roles I am a sucker for that, so probably a large part of my favour for this one was Dan Jeannotte but it did stand up for itself too. Highly recommend.7.12/10.

Surprisingly good

I'm a fan of Christmas rom-coms and rom-coms in general, but I must honestly say that this movie surprised with how good it was, Honestly, I feared it might be a little cheesy, but it wasn't. It was a good, solid rom-com, with down-to-earth, relatable characters.

The premise is interesting. Making amends for "ghosting" people you've dated. I've never done anything so rude personally, but I can see how it might be pretty common in the modern world. We don't really hold it against Ellie, because she's quite likable otherwise, and we understand that she mainly does it because she's a commitment-phobe, something most of us can relate to. I thought the whole setup of this through the fortune teller was pretty weak, but hey, I guess she needed some motivation to try to make it right with all those ghosted guys.

The redemption tour to the previously ghosted was, of course, just a way to get Ellie to spend more time with Charlie, and that's really the relationship we care about. I thought this relationship was handled very well. The two seemed to have chemistry, and their verbal banter was always enjoyable. Plus they were both attractive enough to keep your attention. The relationship developed naturally, without any of the cringe dialog that you might see in a Hallmark film, or the typical forced romantic situations like standing under mistletoe.

The surprise reveal that Charlie is actually the mystery guy that she had the most regrets about ghosting, was kind of unbelievable. Oh sure, in these types of movies, we're expected to suspend disbelief when such an outrageous coincidence happens, and we're usually happy to do so. What I found hard to swallow was that the one big rejection that supposedly scarred Charlie for life, was this one ghosting, where he never even got to meet the girl that ghosted him. I don't know how they could have made it more believable without his outright knowing that the ghoster was Ellie, but they needed to do something to make it more realistic.

One thing I really liked was that the two main characters in this film were techies. As an engineer myself, it frustrates me that people in the tech fields are so underrepresented in rom-coms. Having two techies who were also good-looking and had decent social skills was an even bigger surprise. Normally, if a movie even deigns to have a tech person in the cast, they're usually a total nerd.

Overall, I found this movie quite entertaining and watchable. A nice surprise.

Ghosts of Christmas Past

"Ellie" (Annie Clark) isn't the nicest of souls. She has an habit of chatting with, or meeting, men - then ghosting them. With Christmas fast approaching, she feels a little adrift so heads to a psychic who tells her that she must make amends if she is ever to find real love for herself. So, armed with her mobile phone (this features as prominently as she does in this film) and her, handsome, tech-savvy pal from work "Charlie" (Dan Jeannotte) she sets about trying to apologise for her systemic rudeness over the years. These scenarios form the basis of the story, but the real tale is about the pair of them putting two and two together and, well, it's not rocket science. This is a perfectly watchable, equally forgettable, slice of seasonal slush that gives two B-listers a chance to show off their perfect teeth, deliver some cheesy lines and take us on a journey of self-discovery that leaves us in no doubt at all about what is going to happen at the end. You will not need any cerebral input for this, it is a feel-good, lightly comedic, drama that maybe, just maybe, points out just how thoughtless and ignorant people can be to those they meet online.
