Good, Not Great

I was really looking forward to this after reading about George Clooney's Tony Award-nominated performance, and by that metric, Good Night, Good Luck did not disappoint. His tone, his delivery and his incredibly expressions facial changes really sold this for me. The reason I'm not ranking this a bit higher, and why it disappointed a bit, is the lack of direct conflict with Sen. Joe McCarthy. (I had not seen the movie, so don't know if the stage adaptation follows this is in screenplay.) For me, keeping George McCarthy as a projected image form archival footage just diluted the narrative. Even if Edward Murrow hadn't met McCarthy face to face, having an actor portray him live on stage would have boosted the intensity of their conflict, personified what a nasty historical figure he was and set up the stakes as higher -- which they were.

Well done

A stage play that makes extensive use of historical footage (which is B&W because that is what was the common broadcast format at the time) and addresses a political era that has echoes that apply today. Edward R. Murrow took a stand as a journalist, and it was a stand that influenced decades of journalists, especially TV journalists. This play addresses that era and that action.

Bold and timely!

Broadway at it's best! This show could not be more timely, and it was a bold move for CNN to make this viewable without a paywall or cable subscription. Excellently talented cast, musical interludes, with set and costume that really sold the time period. I don't want to give away anything not mentioned in promos, but know that this particular play is based on real people and true events in history that nevertheless speak to our present day dilemma. I don't know if it will be watchable again on HBO MAX or CNN, but I do hope one of them will have the recording for people who missed it for work shifts.
