Plot summary

In order to cure Hei Ling, a terminal illness, the Kunlun healer, Bai Ze, was banished after accidentally destroying an island. Seven years later, he returns to the island to seek redemption.

Better than expected!

I wasn't expecting this movie to be as good as it was! Don't get me wrong, it's nothing to seriously write home about, but the animation was fluid and the characters were funny. The only thing I wasn't necessarily a fan of was the one (1) fart joke as well as that little vegetable guy with the shrill voice. The story has quite a few interpretations to its meaning, but I like to imagine that it means "Kindness is the Best Medicine". No, really, as cheesy as it sounds! The care that Bai Ze learns to adopt for his patients is admirable, and his relationship with Yi is the cutest thing ever! Huo Zhu needs to take a chill pill though, yeesh. Overall, watch this movie if you're alright with accepting and enjoying it for what it is.

Goodbye Monster

In Shanhai Jing: Zaijian Gaoshou, which has been released in the U. S. as Goodbye Monster, a young doctor disobeys orders and uses an untested idea to defeat the Dark Spirit. The bad news? Well, he accidentally destroys the hospital and is banished from Kunlun Hospital, forbidden from ever practicing medicine again. But when a young boy comes to him for healing, he may have one more chance to redeem himself and somehow save his home.Inspired by The Legend of the White Snake, Bai Ze has ruined his life. He believed that instead of keeping Dark Spirits simply at bay, they could be completely removed. Now a man without a home or a job, but still filled with way too much pride. He hasn't learned his lesson yet.Yet this movie is about healing, about getting over the past and trying to become a better person. Those are big ideas for a cartoon, but I found this effortlessly dealing with them. It may be better for older kids, but I think families will really like Goodbye Monster.
