fluorescent solitude

Pedro appears in the film with his face hidden by his long hair; he is an introverted young man who seems uncomfortable even when alone in his room. Walking with his arms at his sides and his head slightly bowed, he speaks in a low voice and avoids leaving his home as much as possible. When he is outside, he feels uneasy under the gaze of others (a discomfort that the directors translate through subjective camera angles, centered on passersby, thus illustrating the protagonist's state of mind for the viewer). It must be said that he has spent almost his entire life enduring the prejudices and judgments (real or imagined) of his school and university classmates: his solitude is thus the result of a process against which he has invented an alternative way of being, mediated by webcam. It is only there, by making himself fluorescent and eroticizing himself for strangers, that he seems to feel truly alive. In the background, the cold and melancholic city always seems present. It houses a digital society of lost souls to whom he offers and sells his erotic image, and which seems like a mirror or a justification of Pedro's feelings.Along his path, Pedro will meet three characters who will disrupt his reality, including the enigmatic and obsessive Leo: the bond that develops between them gives the film a breath of life that humanizes it.The nudity of the body finally acquires a new meaning, and the work records not only the detours of solitude, but above all the emergence of desire. An atmospheric film, a captivating portrait of disillusionment, an intimate and hypnotic character study performed with naturalness and sensitivity, it is a sensory journey in fluorescent colors that, like Pedro, are only revealed in the darkness, an oasis of strangeness, carried by dynamic editing and an unpredictable narrative that, in my opinion, would have benefited from being shorter. Shico Menegat

His acting is the axis of a bitter- melancholic film about loneliness, exhibition as only form of fake happiness and real sense of life, about friendless, pragmaticism and tough choices, about different levels of ambiguity. A not comfortable film, familiar story in many aspects, it have the virtue to propose a bizarre character - Pedro- reminding a dandy , a Gothic character, a fragile ephebus, a sort of Manierism image and the androgenity. Short, Shico Menegat is the lead motif to see this story from Porto Aleggre.

Alone but for the internet

Pedro is socially awkward and friendless, and has been kicked out of school and faces criminal charges for attacking a schoolmate who bullied him. HIs sister gets a job transfer to the far side of Brazil, leaving him to pay the rent on their shared apartment - and the fine for noise from sister's farewell party.

Pedro has been making money off weekly internet shows, where as Neonboy he strips down and fondles himself with glow-in-the-dark paints. He finds that Boy25 (Leo) has been copying his technique, and finds him to warn him off. A one-night-only duet is popular and becomes regular, and they fall in love. With this parents dead or missing, Pedro is desperate enough to ask Leo to be his "family support" when he goes to court. But Leo is a dancer who is looking for a scholarship to study with / join a better company elsewhere.

I saw this at the Inside Out festival, where the directors stated the theme is people leaving - in a smaller city, many people leave for opportunities in larger cities or abroad. Overall the movie is good, though there are parts that have overly dramatic effects.
