JUST OKAY - (6 stars out of 10)

The stage curtains open ..."What you can't hear could kill you."This is my first time seeing Marlee Matlin in a film, a deaf actress who truly has tons of charisma and good acting ability. Also starring with her in this thriller are Martin Sheen in a very lackluster role, D. B. Sweeney who had the most interesting character (IMO), and John C. McGinley in a role to forget. This film is clearly centered around Marlee Matlin and her character, and despite the film's shortcomings, she carries it well.An extremely rare and valuable coin has been stolen from a museum and has somehow found its way into the possession of Jillian, a deaf woman, who has no idea that she even has it. Hot on the trail are two corrupt cops who will do anything they can to get their hands on it, even murder, if that's what it takes. Helping her out is Ben, the friend of a man who lost his life because of the coin. Together, they play a cat and mouse game with the corrupt cops only to find out that there is something more sinister going on in the shadows and behind the scenes that could push them right over the edge. This was a stylish film with some nice chemistry between Marlee Matlin and D. B. Sweeney. The core love story between them was sweet and sincere and brought some heart into the movie. The film moves along at a nice pace, and the cinematography was solid with good camera work and editing. However, overall, the movie is shallow and lacks any real substance to make this a great thriller. It was nothing more than average and serviceable, unfortunately.I still enjoyed it though. It was time well spent, and the final reveal I honestly didn't see coming, so they get props for that. I would be interested in seeing other films that feature Marlee Matlin. I've never seen "Children Of A Lesser God", for which she won awards for. Perhaps I will make that my next watched film. I wouldn't necessarily recommend "Hear No Evil", but I wouldn't dissuade anyone from watching it either. Not great, but not bad.

Needed to be more balanced than that

This movie was a bit on the so-so side. A thriller that has received a bad rap. But on the other hand, it had a little educational, and humorous side to it. Marlee Matlin, one of my favorite hearing impaired actresses did a spectacular role in "Children of a lesser god", did an O.K. job in this movie, though her speech is impaired, I can understand some of the things she's saying. D.B. Sweeney, from "Memphis Belle", and the short lived series "Strange Luck", could have put a little pep in his step. The best part of the movie was when the couple got to "get it on" he learned a few words about sexual intimacy in sign language. The part where she did the sign for "erection" was a riot! That was one of the bright spots in the movie. The plot was rather typical, and the outcome was a bit of a no brainer, the stars deserve better, this movie however was no exception. Rating 2 out of 5 stars.
