A Dysfunctional Film About a Dysfunctional Family

The obvious allegory for today's average dysfunctional family aside, "Good Boy" (or "Heel," as it's known in some countries) certainly contains all the ingredients of an above-average film, from a unique, highly intriguing plot, to interesting and relatable charaters, to excellent actors and numerous important, well-developed themes (incl. Control, the lingering effects of trauma, redemption, and the soul-crushing nature of familial obligation). Mixed together and baked for an hour-and-a-half, however, the final product just doesn't seem to rise to the level its ingredients would at first glance predict. At least, this is what I wanted to say before watching the last 15 minutes of the film, when the awkwardness and far-out, bat-s#!& craziness of it all seemed to coalesce into something truly beautiful, teaching this viewer an essential lesson about the human condition. In short: "Good Boy" (aka, "Heel") may be a stretch; an imperfect film that challenges one's ability to suspend disbelief. However, those who stick with it till the end will be surprisingly and handsomely rewarded.

Good Boy!

I really was immersed in this movie and was hooked from the very start. It was well paced and acted brilliantly by all concerned. Graham is always satisfying to watch and one of the UK's greatest actors. I loved the slow story telling and found it gripping and full of surprises. As a 'kidnapping' movie it worked for me on every level. I did not want it to end. I found the conclusion satisfying but could have done with more. It definitely deserves its 8 stars.

Original, edgy, engaging but imperfect & morally dubious Brit-drama

In edgy Brit-drama "Heel" (aka "Good Boy") vile anti-social yob Anson Boon (good) is snatched by odd Stephen Graham (strong again) who imprisons him in the basement of the isolated home he shares with equally odd wife Andrea Riseborough, young son Kit Rakusen, & maid Monica Frajczyk - as a well intentioned but def'ly strange project he & Riseborough are running. Jan Komasa directs solidly enough (for his first English language film (before making the mediocre "Anniversary")) but of key interest are co-writers Naqqash Khalid (with his 2nd screenplay) & Bartek Bartosik (on his debut) who are original but morally dubious (and leave some holes). It's imperfect but engaging.
