A Positive Surprise from Vietnamese Cinema in 2025

Hijacking may not be a new subject in global cinema, yet it remains largely unexplored in Vietnamese filmmaking. This novelty is what initially drew audiences to the film and reignited interest in returning to the cinema. Despite modest expectations regarding the script and dialogue-often regarded as recurring weaknesses of Vietnamese productions-the film delivers a remarkably engaging experience. With most of the story unfolding in the confined setting of an aircraft, concerns about limited visual dynamics and narrative progression were valid. However, the film sustains tension throughout its two-hour runtime, maintaining a gripping pace from the very first moments. The unfolding events are both logical and consistently suspenseful, ensuring that viewers remain captivated. Those planning to see the film are advised to arrive on time, as crucial details appear almost immediately. The performances are another highlight. Thái Hòa and Kaity, both established box office draws, once again justify their reputations with convincing portrayals. Notably, the supporting cast also delivers uniformly strong performances, with each role contributing meaningfully to the overall narrative. In terms of visuals, the production relies heavily on CGI to recreate the atmosphere of the 1970s and 1980s. While the effects may not be flawless and occasional inconsistencies are visible, they remain effective and align with the current technical standard of Vietnamese cinema. The film's 16+ rating is also well-justified. Unlike many domestic productions, it does not shy away from depicting graphic violence and coarse language, both of which enhance the authenticity of the hijackers' brutality and prevent the film from appearing overly staged. Overall, this production stands out as one of the most accomplished action thrillers ever made in Vietnam. It demonstrates that the industry's limitations are not rooted in a lack of talent, but rather in insufficient opportunities and hesitancy to tackle more complex or sensitive themes. This is a film that deserves to be experienced in theaters, and it is unlikely to disappoint.

Thai Hoa's Mastery Carries a One-Dimensional Narrative

Visual (8.5/10): The cinematography is undeniably the film's most impressive feat. The action sequences are visually stunning, utilizing camera setups and angles designed to maximize tension and maintain a breakneck pace for both the hijackers and the air marshals. The costume design and makeup are executed with grit, effectively portraying the brutal and ruthless nature of the hijackers. However, the color grading feels somewhat overly polished and vibrant, likely an attempt to mask the CGI limitations of the aircraft. Had the production utilized more practical aircraft models, the realism would have been significantly enhanced. Nevertheless, this remains a rare example of Vietnamese cinematography approaching international standards.Narrative (7/10): While inspired by a true story, the screenplay adopts a disappointingly one-dimensional approach. The film draws a sharp line between the "heroic" air marshals and the "absolute evil" of the hijackers, ignoring the complex historical motivations of the era. I had hoped the writers would explore the desperation and lack of hope that drove individuals to such extreme lengths to leave the country at that time. Even with the character Long, played by the veteran Thai Hoa, the script fails to delve into the underlying causes of his actions, choosing instead to use him as a foil for the marshals' heroism. Furthermore, the dialogue remains stiff and "textbook-like" rather than feeling natural-a predictable outcome for a military-sponsored production.Direction (7/10): As noted in the narrative, a flawed script makes it difficult for a director to fully unlock a cast's potential. Consequently, what could have been a multi-perspective historical drama ends up feeling more like a visceral, bloody action spectacle. While the director's ability to coordinate high-octane action and maintain a relentless tempo is undeniable-marking a significant leap for the local industry-the creative vision ultimately fails to elevate the one-dimensional script into something more profound.Soul/Acting (9/10): The performances by Thai Hoa and Kaity Nguyen effectively carry the film, occasionally making the rest of the cast appear lackluster by comparison. However, every actor fulfills their role adequately within the framework of this violent action saga. Thai Hoa's performance, in particular, is in a league of its own. He delivers a world-class portrayal that single-handedly elevates the film's emotional stakes and provides its most memorable moments.Sound (7/10): The technical sound design is acceptable, but the dialogue clarity is a persistent issue. Even for a native speaker, catching every line is a struggle. The musical score and background themes are functional but uninspired, following a standard "textbook" approach that fails to leave a lasting impression on the audience.Total Score: 7.675/10.
