Beaver? I hardly know her.

'Hoppers (2026)' takes a little while to get going, but it's eventually a really fun, cute and even fairly emotional adventure that's actually a tiny bit unconventional in its plotting. Perhaps it's minor Pixar, particularly in terms of its humour-to-heart ratio, but it's potentially more straightforwardly enjoyable than a lot of their more recent efforts (the difference between it and 'Elio (2025)' is night and day). The animation is lively, colourful and peppered with anime-inspired flair (most notably the protagonist's hair and its ability to flex itself when she gets angry), and the voice work is as solid as you'd expect from an ensemble put together by this studio. The world is refreshingly realistic in its approach to the harsh circle of life inherent to nature's ecosystems, and some of its plot beats are surprisingly bold in their bluntness and their almost brutality. It's also rather funny at times, and should keep you in good spirits even during its least laugh-out-loud segments, and its emotional resonance works nicely potentially precisely because it's more subdued and naturalistic than customary for the studio. It's well-paced, well-designed, well-intentioned, and, well, just quite lovely. Like I say, there's a sense that this is minor Pixar, but it's quite major in terms of modern animated family films. There arguably isn't all that much more to say, but that doesn't mean the picture isn't worth your time. It's entertaining from start to finish, and I had a really good time with it.

Decent Pixar with fun animal premise

I wasn't sure whether I was going to like this at the beginning, but as the animal hopping wildlife/human plot stuff starts kicking into gear more heavily, it won me over as I started enjoying it much more for the crazy antics, emotion and fun moments of the premise. Still nowhere near top tier Pixar and fairly hit and miss with jokes and a bit rushed in places, but a decent time overall just like last year's Elio.6.5/10.

Pixar's wildest movie

Hoppers is a funny and heartfelt animated movie that's more willing than most to acknowledge the violent truth of the circle of life in a darkly comedic fashion and people's inability to change before it backpedals to a satisfying ending focused on how everyone needs to work together to help undo the damage done to nature which still works. It establishes a firm emotional core straight away, goes to truly wild places and is definitely kinda like Avatar in the best ways.Piper Curda gives a fantastic leading performance that has all the necessary energy to match every insane scenario on screen and an earnest emotion ensuring her desire to save the environment everyone else seems to ignore is instantly investing. Bobby Moynihan is the strongest supporting player by having an unwavering kindness which becomes his character's greatest strength and there's also some strong turns from Jon Hamm, Dave Franco and Eduardo Franco.Daniel Chong's energetic direction moves quickly at the start but knows when to slow down afterwards with impactful moments of serenity and the screenplay by Jesse Andrews handles exposition so efficiently. The animation retains the characteristically high level of detail and vibrancy in places whilst successfully experimenting with some more cartoonish character designs. Mark Mothersbaugh's score is a highlight that works because it's just as lively as everything else.
