Over Hated but Massively Flawed

An artful and promising directorial debut for Tara Subkoff, but its satiric nature is muddled by a cast of unlikable and unrelatable preteen characters, a blatant message, a drifting plot, and a lack of explanation. This hyper stylized and misanthropic angst fest of middle school melodrama clearly doesn't aim to be taken seriously, but from a film making perspective, this film is no joke. This film is put together with care, and the final product is nothing short of mesmerizing. The shots are artful and dreamy, hitting the same vein (stylistically) as that of Sofia Coppola, using its setting for some really inventive imagery, unlike another film called Queen of Earth which hardly utilized its setting to produce something good looking. Timothy Hutton and Chloe Sevigny are both over the top but clearly intentionally so, their performances are wonderful no less, Sevigny adds loads of personality to her character, a character which would otherwise be a blank slate if performed by any other actress. As for the younger ensemble, the majority of them struggle to make a presence on screen, but they end up blending together and not standing out, the only performance that is really commendable (and I use that word rather sparingly) is that of Sadie Steelert in the role of Sam, but even then her performance is nothing more than serviceable. They're clearly intentionally outlandish but not one of them is a name or a character that I'll remember. The score by EMA was what I found most surprising, blending classic horror themes and more practical instrumentation with contemporary synths and lush production, giving the film a very cold and apathetic vibe, it's a mesmerizing score. There a really good film here, but it's buried beneath a slippery slope of a screenplay.Narratively inconsistent, preachy messages, lacking in much needed explanation, hugely unlikable and unmemorable characters, lots of un-inventive dialogue for our younger cast of characters, it's a script that is ambitious and clearly aims to be provocative, but at the same time is not entirely willing to go the extra mile. It wants to be this exploitative study on how the Internet has created a culture of apathetic and misanthropic youth, but it isn't willing to dive into the murky depths of human depravity, unlike a much better film: the 2014 release MEN, WOMEN & CHILDREN. It scratches above the surface but hardly gives you something to chew on. Tara Subkoff has some great ideas and has an eye for lush and artful film making, but as a writer, there's clearly room for improvement. I'm not sure I'd recommend it, but I very much enjoyed #Horror and who knows I may watch it again, and I will definitely have my eye on Tara Subkoff.

Am I the only one who didn't like this?

Having read the five reviews before watching this my expectation was high and as I love this genre (thought Unfriended was awesome) I was tingling...

The subject matter was odd with young girls running wild around a house full of the freakiest art I have ever seen. Many attempts were made by the director and author to connect to or feel something toward the characters but I am afraid I couldn't, it felt like a paedo entrapment film and the characters were 12 year old bitches.

This was a big disappointment and I really tried to enjoy it. I guessed what was going on really quickly and the film did not surprise me.

I have voted this a four as the filming was OK (given the location it shouldn't have been hard) but everything else was just dire..

End of line.
