Chevy Chase is a human being, with everything that entails

This documentary is a raw and honest portrait of a man who is often misunderstood. What I took away from it is that Chevy Chase is simply a human being. He comes with all the flaws and virtues that entails. He was incredibly good at what he did and he made millions of people laugh for decades. At the same time, he is a difficult man with a lot of internal pain. He is easily hurt and often lacks the social finesse to see that he is hurting others as well. The most beautiful part of the film is seeing his family life. When you see his loving family and his successful daughters, you see the love that exists within this man. He has made some very poor choices with his words, such as using the 'n-word.' It seems he did not realize that times have changed. In his mind, he was likely looking back at the days with Richard Pryor, where they could trade those insults as part of their comedy. This film gives an insight into a complex person with complex feelings. He can be funny and sweet, but also blunt and unkind. Chevy Chase is a human being, and this film captures that perfectly.

Honest glimpse at a controversial legand

The movie had some publications that initially caused me to believe Chevy was a weird star gone bad, but in reality it manages to capture an overnight celebrity who rose very fast, and due to the ghosts of the past and not quite adapting got a bad reputation as a meaner than actually isIt couldve been a little more deep in my opinion, but does a great job capturing the good, bad and misunderstood nature of Chevy Chase.

Interesting, but a couple of issues:

No matter what you think of Chevy professionally or as a person, this was, generally speaking, interesting and well-done.Before watching, I saw him as someone who has entertained and made me laugh from SNL and a few movies, and I came away from this documentary with a somewhat deeper knowledge and understanding of him as a human being, husband, and father...and where a lot of his humor and challenges came from, which apparently is from his difficult role as a son.Despite his professional reputation - proclaimed as negative by some - it seems pretty clear that he has a great family and is a good husband and father...and his talent on screen can't be denied. There were a few issues with this production, however. First, regarding the interviewer: either commit fully to the banter bit with Chevy, or leave it out altogether...the middle ground leaves the viewer to wonder if she was coming from a somewhat hostile angle. Second, what on earth was Ryan Reynolds doing there? There is seemingly no actual connection to Chevy, and he offered absolutely nothing of any substance...so his (thankfully small) presence in this was bizarre. Third, how do you do a documentary on Chevy Chase's life and career and completely leave out "Seems Like Old Times"? Not a mention...not a clip...not even still shot. Crazy. Also, one wishes this could have gone a little deeper, but based on Chevy's own words, perhaps he didn't want that. And a note to Lorne Michaels: there is absolutely no way whatsoever to reasonably spin not having Chevy in a sketch and onstage at the 50th - sure, he's not the entire show and is one of many stars, but he is to SNL what, say, Farrah is to Charlie's Angels, or Suzanne to Three's Company (and so on) - - even if he was difficult, he was a huge part of the start/early success of the show (you know, back when SNL was actually funny & when the show was cool enough to make fun of *both* political sides - remember that?). Obviously the buck stopped with you, so your decision to not make absolutely sure he was highlighted in some way only made you look ridiculous - so, deservedly, Chevy gets the last laugh.
