A fun but uneven return to the world of Influencer

When I watched Influencer back in 2022, I was not expecting much given the rather generic title. However, I was pleasantly surprised by a tightly written thriller with enjoyable characters and a solid script. Did that movie need a sequel? No. Do I mind that they made one? Absolutely not. So here we go, and be aware that there are spoilers for the first movie. We follow CW, who somehow escaped the island and is now in a relationship with a French woman while continuing her murderous spree in Southern France. Meanwhile, Madison is publicly trying to prove that the previous murders had nothing to do with her and were the work of a mysterious woman with a birthmark who pretended to be her.I was expecting the change of setting to Southern France to play a bigger role, especially since it is a location I am familiar with and was curious to see how it would affect the tone. However, it does not take long before the characters return to Asia, Bali to be exact. For me, this was a small letdown because the surroundings end up feeling rather similar to the first movie, and I would have appreciated a stronger sense of change in setting and culture.Throughout the movie, we are introduced to multiple characters who are mostly unique and memorable. The characterization works well overall, and the acting does too, even though some of the characters are not particularly likable. Cassandra Naud as CW was a standout in the first movie, and she is easily the highlight here as well. Her character is interesting, and she delivers a strong performance that almost makes it hard to root against her, even though she is clearly the villain. My biggest issue with the movie is that the script feels unfocused and somewhat all over the place. The pacing is not nearly as tight as in the first film, and the frequent shifts in setting and perspective do not work as smoothly. The original movie flowed better and felt more confident in its direction, while this sequel often seems unsure of where it wants to go. I would have preferred a prequel that follows CW as she first discovers her bloodlust and the motives that drive her. We learn very little about her backstory, including how she developed her skills with AI and programming or how she ended up in Thailand stealing influencers identities in the first place. Since she is by far the most interesting character, this approach could have worked well, similar to Saw X, where the audience unexpectedly roots for the killer. The movie still features strong cinematography and is competently made overall, but the script remains its weakest element. The attractive locations, stylish visuals, and generally light tone are reminiscent of the first film and still enjoyable. Unfortunately, this sequel does not come together as effectively. It feels drawn out and unfocused, and despite some entertaining sequences, especially toward the very end, I was slightly let down. Still, it is a fun horror thriller that serves its purpose, and fans of the first movie will likely find something to enjoy here as well. [5,3/10]

Not as good as the first one

I enjoyed the original from 2022, it had a simple story, shot in beautiful Thailand and wasn't trying to be something more than what it was - a silly thriller with a touch of horror. Cassandra Naud stole the show with her beauty and her captivating screen presence as CW, and at an overall 90 min running time it didn't have too many boring moments. The Sequel however, is almost 2 hours, and tries to add a relationship angle to CW's life, which makes it a bit boring and makes her character less mysterious as she was in the first movie. Also, Police doesn't seem to exist in the world of 'influencers', people get murdered left and right, and not one single police officer shows up.The ending was wild but also didn't make much sense, let's see if they make a third one, if they do, i hope they will return to basics, and keep it simple with not more than 90 min running time.
