A Familiar Couch, Well-Worn Cushions

The family reunion spiralling into chaos thanks to misunderstandings or unwanted guests is a staple of French popular comedy - one turbocharged by the success of Qu'est ce qu'on a fait au bon dieu, spawning increasingly indistinguishable films with increasingly tired mechanics. This time, a psychotherapist discovers that his daughter's new boyfriend is the neurotic patient he quietly dropped a year earlier. It's not that Jamais sans mon psy fails to raise a smile - it's that it never offers a single genuinely new idea or a slapstick sequence worth remembering. Every attempt to sabotage the young couple has been seen countless times before.Even Baptiste Lecaplain, usually a livewire on stage, is criminally underused. Ultimately, the film feels like a delivery system for Christian Clavier alone, whose exasperated bourgeois expressions still do the trick - though I'm fairly certain I've seen them in about forty other films over the past decade.

A young man suffering from 10 or more psychological issues starts to get involved with his therapist's family. It's purely slapstick, but the story did a few unnecessary detours that felt awkward (the black secretary bringing her whole family into the therapist's practice during his absence, the wheelchair guy etc.) while we didn't learn much about the main characters and why they were behaving like they did. None of the characters were particularly likeable, and how everything was resolved at the end felt a bit forced and not convincing.Easy entertainment for a lazy afternoon, but not to be watched with many expectations.
