Family Neuroses, Gentle Madness, and the Art of the French Tragicomedy

Yet another comic-book adaptation - one I don't know, and whose tonal fidelity I would be hard-pressed to confirm or deny - Juliette au printemps nevertheless belongs among French tragicomedies at their very best. A return to one's roots, the reactivation of family pathology between a self-centred mother, a neurotic sister, a kind but evasive father, passing romances, and above all long-buried secrets and unspoken truths responsible for the general malaise of a young woman spending time back in the provinces. All of this is very classical; every conflict will find its resolution sooner or later. But with actors perfectly cast in their respective roles and a wide range of themes (menopause, mental load, and more) handled with unfailing accuracy, Juliette au printemps achieves a rare balance, even within its own niche. Able to be serious when needed, it also piles up gently surreal situations allowing everyone to project their own personal case at one moment or another, bathing in a soft madness and never skimping on tasty one-liners.Oh, and Sophie Guillemin - far too rarely seen - is in it. That alone was worth an extra point.
