A raw film, has the right pieces but it's a very slow burn

Cliched but Watchable

It's a slightly above average crime action movie. The plot is interesting most of the time. The characters play their role well, but don't have any depth. The movie is very predictable, but had a very entertaining climax. It's the classic B action movie. The biggest thing that rubbed me the wrong way was the marketing. You would have though the movie was a gritty look at the drug trade from multiple perspectives. That's not what the movie is at all. The police procedures, level of violence, general incompetence of the police is beyond implausible. Cameras don't exist in prisons in this movie.More details on movieCharacters: Main character is a gruff cop. He's a stoic straight laced tough guy. His son likes drugs too much. You know this guy, he's in every cop show. He serves his role well.Mexican Drug dealer: This character is played by Nacho from Better Call Saul. He's a ruthless drug dealer. His redeeming qualities are his daughter has a health problem that he takes care of. He takes a bit of a liking to a young illegal alien whom he is paid to smuggle across the border. I thought he was entertaining, but a bit predictable.Main Cop's son: Rebellious teenager who likes drugs too much. His GF is pretty hot. Honestly that was the biggest redeeming factor to his scenes. His scenes were just boring and should have been cut from the film.Irish Tough Guy: He's paroled after serving time for murder. He doesn't exactly intend to turn over a new leaf, and is right back to his old ways right after he leaves prison. I thought a lot of his scenes were interesting, but his character doesn't really add anything to them.Plot: Pretty good. Very broad strokes, the mexicans are pushing drugs in Tusla through a native american gang. After a very violent incident, violence within the gang and attention from law enforcement increase dramatically. The plot does a good job of driving tne movie forward. It will not surprise , you at all, but is serviceable.I thought the action scenes were entertaining and intense. The outcomes were pretty predictable and they were pretty over the top, but they were fun to watch. It's an okay movie that probably won't bore you most of the time. No more, no less..

King Has Zing

I snuck into this film having no idea what it was about. It was a treat. I was so pleasantly surprised. There are so many characters and threads to follow and I was always engaged. At a hundred thirty minutes, it was ten too long and I had plans, so I was anxious for it to wrap up. West's speeches were too preachy and unnecessary. Show, don't tell. The title refers to the street name for Fentanyl and how it's killing OK. The lead, James Badge Dale, is terrific as West. We see him on the job with superiors, partner, wife and son. He must have been in makeup a long time for those tattoos. Michael Mando is great as his primary foe Garza. Richie Coster is wonderful as Mickey Greene. Oscar winner Melissa Leo is enjoyable as Smiley's mom. Ben Foster is a hoot as Smiley. Jasper Jones will have a long career. He is West's troubled son. Kaylee Curry is good as his gf Carly. Graham Greene as Holt Lightfeather is fantastic. Even a small role like Cap is well done by Ben Hall. It only earned $129 per screening its first weekend, so it's in ICU like one character. But you'll enjoy the action and people.
