Kite 1.5

Loose sequel to the anime Kite (1998), this is a sci-fi-actioner, centred around a girl named Monaka who seems even younger than 'Sawa' from the first film. Monaka is also a highly skilled assassin with access to state-of-the-art weaponry - although we get no backstory as to how and why. Her widowed father is a worker on the International Space Station. As Monaka is working her way through a hit list of paedophiles an accident on the ISS involving experimental treatment to maintain astronauts' bone density and radiation exposure gives rise to two Doomsday-like monsters. The first is destroyed on the ISS but the second manages to travel to Earth. Monaka receives word that her current 'kill the pedos' mission has been paused and the new priority is to kill the surviving monster, now roaming the city. The 'adult content' is jettisoned this time around, with the focus being on Monaka's efforts to maintain her quiet, clumsy 'female Clark Kent' alter-ego's life, whilst as the 'Angel of Death' she tracks down and battles the monster. I've read that the director hoped this would launch an anime show, but tha didn't happen. It's not a gripping as the first film, and the lack of backstory (presumably to be filled-in in the hoped-for series) is frustrating, but the action is pretty well done. Shame the twist near the end is so predictable. 6/10.

Huh...

Well, this is pretty much identical to the original Kite and Merzzo Forte; violence, some great animation, perverted comedy, and an extremely dark tone. It's nice to see that the unneeded graphic sex was given up in favor of an actual plot (!) with somewhat fleshed-out characters, for once. The plot itself is pretty cliché and nothing we haven't seen a thousand times before, but I have to give them credit for trying.

It's too bad, though, that despite all the style and some violence and an overall entertaining time, the whole thing just doesn't add up to... well... anything. It just kind of falls apart and ends. Extremely lazy and stupid and pointless ending will probably annoy almost every potential fan of this film.

...I'd rate this somewhere above Kite and Mezzo Forte, but it's still not that great.
