puzzling

Given solid production values and performances the film is above most of the low ratings here. For me somewhere between 5 and 6.Though it's not superlative I think some viewers react to the subject rather than the story. Many--myself included--are unaccepting of the arrogance of evangelicals with their self-appointed mission to "save" anyone, let alone protected tribes. No one needs to be told what to think and believe. For believers the film surely is not sufficiently dogmatic.I think the film does pretty well with John Allen Chau's psychology. His tragedy was a combination of emotional/cognitive immaturity and immersion in cult religion. The story is a cautionary tale with the takeaway that evangelical extremism is more than a weird eccentricity; it's corrosive and destroys lives. There's one (accurate) incident that intrigues and remains unanswered: where did the Sentinelese get a metal arrowhead?

Fanaticism kills

I once read a review with a line I never forgot: "not every good story makes a good film." Last Days is exactly that. The real story is compelling, but on screen it simply doesn't hold together.I'm agnostic, raised Catholic, and I've always seen Abrahamic religions - especially Protestantism - as having a colonialist impulse disguised as a "universal truth." They don't truly respect other beliefs; they pretend to, but they don't accept them. That's why it's impossible to sympathize with John. I'm not the kind of person who says "he got what he deserved," but I also can't feel empathy for someone who, driven by fanaticism and arrogance, believes he can "save" a people who asked for no salvation at all, putting them at risk just to fulfill his personal mission. The narrative is split between what happened to John and, in the future, the police officer trying to uncover his whereabouts. This structure only harms the film: whenever one part starts getting interesting, the other cuts the momentum.Last Days portrays a complicated man - and what's most surprising is seeing Protestants treat John as a martyr, as if no one learned anything from the tragedy. He received every possible sign to turn back and ignored them all. And it's even more absurd to hear his family say they "forgive" his killers, as if anyone other than John himself were to blame.

Watched at the 2025 Sundance Film FestivalI'm sorry, but this movie really stinks. Creating a story about a misguided individual and exploring throughout their journey is a good concept as it offers an interesting take of a character study of a movie. Unfortunately Justin Lin fails to really serve its purpose and it ends up being more of a dull and rather frustrating experience.John Allen Chau and what has happened to him is both frustrating and astonishing as the context of trying to spread religion to a group of uncivilized individuals is insanely idiotic, yet fascinating to know the fact that it actually happened. But it's clear Lin doesn't seem to understand how to handle some of the tone and atmosphere approaches. Implementing a narrative that is filled with traditional biographical cliches and messy structures, it lacks the emotional and focus impact it desires. Failing to really create an interesting observation about Chau and ends up being all over the place regarding what the message the movie wants to say. Is it want to sympathize with Chau or not? Because the direction and writing doesn't do a good job with it.There are some good cinematography throughout which is one of the only good things about this movie. Unfortunately, the performances aren't very good and as much the actors are trying their best, their performances lack the emotional engagement and moment to shine. If you had known about Chau and read about what has happened, the narrative, character arches and development doesn't offer anything new.I understand Justin Lin's approach to the story, but this one really doesn't work. I rather recommend Into the Wild or the documentary The Mission (2023).
