If ever a film demanded a sequel, this one does

Lawrence (Hayward, but he doesn't use it) is a songwriter from suburban Birmingham, now (on and off methadone he says) in London who wants to be rich and famous. 'The first pensioner pop star', he says. He's had a few bands - Felt, Denim (wot, no Suede?) and in this film Go-Kart Mozart which are now Mozart Estate. This film shows bits of their gig in Paris in 2011, Lawrence in his car, in shops, in the studio, and a great shot at the end with an endless zoom out from Lawrence on his flat's balcony near Old Street. He idolises Lou Reed; his music is pretty consistently in the Pulp vein with catchier tunes; a deadpan English voice with acerbic, witty lyrics and hooky choruses. Why isn't he rich and famous, then? Could be that he was just a bit too edgy for Britpop, and that awful baseball cap with the perspex peak does him no favours. Nor, I fear does the keyboard player, who constantly upstages the whole band both visually and musically- think Keith Emerson playing in The Velvet Underground. (This may be Martin Duffy, who has since died RIP).But Lawrence isn't stupid, just troubled, and he's wryly funny. I really wish Paul Kelly would go back and do a followup, it could be Lawrence's moment at last.
