"Mimi" cheers me right up

Watching the beginning of Love Me Tonight is guaranteed to put a smile on your face. You'll either enjoy it, or you'll laugh at how silly it is - but laughing is still smiling! I found the corny musical delightful, but I understand it's not everybody's cup of tea. Similar to Beauty and the Beast, a boisterous village street in France sings their good mornings to the audience. The number ends in a modest tailor's shop, where a happy-go-lucky tailor, Maurice Chevalier, greets the day.In this tongue-in-cheek period piece, Maurice falls in love with a princess, Jeanette MacDonald, and has to pretend to be high-class to woo her. There are lots of adorable songs, and charm present in every scene. This early musical features Maurice's iconic number "Mimi". Whenever I'm feeling blue, I just have to watch him sing "Mimi" with an endless twinkle in his eye and his constant grin; it perks me up in just a few seconds. In the supporting cast, you'll see Myrna Loy, Charles Ruggles, C. Aubrey Smith, Charles Butterworth, and Elizabeth Patterson. You do have to be in the mood for something silly, but if you are, I highly recommend Love Me Tonight. He's ridiculous sometimes, but Maurice is extremely entertaining.

A comment from someone who saw the film in its initial release.

For what it is worth, here is a bit of "Americana". I found a letter from my father to my mother written on September 11, 1932 ,(nine years before they were married, by the way). In it he mentioned having gone to see this film. His review is as follows..."I went to see Maurice Chevalier tonight in his latest, 'Love Me Tonight'. Say, I have more technique than that guy, any night. He is losing all he had, can I give him pointers?".I had to correct some spellings errors in the quote, otherwise IMDb wouldn't accept it. Pity. That way it loses a bit of the flavor and intention of a "Quote"I take it that my Dad liked the movie.
