Decent supernatural exorcism flick, with a heavy side of edgy

I was intrigued by the high and low ratings here and gave this a try. After watching, I still find them perplexing. This is an okay movie. It is not a masterpiece. It is not crap.Menendez is a strongly supernatural Spanish exorcism flick-- there's no bandying about with potentially mundane explanations. Our title character is a tortured former priest, just out of jail for murder of a previous exorcism beneficiary/victim. His method? Beat the ever-living crap out of the possessed until the demon is forced out, then beat the ever-living crap out of the now manifest demon. A jail buddy convinces him to go back for One Last Exorcism....And, in this, Menendez is perfectly acceptable. It doesn't make you think or go Oh Wow or anything like that. It doesn't care if it makes sense or not. It's just a regular old horror movie. It's on the melodramatic side, even considering the melodrama bias of exorcism flicks in general, which might explain some of the "It's Comedy" reviews (no, it's not comedy.)Where it is notable is where it's willing to go-- and that might be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the audience. Menendez spends a decent amount of time on straight-out torture porn. As promised, we get to watch our possessed victim get the ever-living crap beat out of them. Then, we get to watch their fingernails pulled out. Then, there's some incest. Which isn't too unfair, this is just Linda Blair's crucifix updated for the current millennium. It's not sexy, but it's still exploitative (not necessarily intended as a pejorative.) This isn't A Serbian Film, but fans out of that kind of stuff will probably get some similar enjoyment out of Menendez. And a lot of other people will probably get really turned off (which at least might explain some of the 1 ratings here.)The story here is acceptable, nothing special. The torture porn is at the level where it will turn off most viewers, while not being extreme enough for the die-hards. If you don't mind torture porn, this is an okay way to while away a few hours, but that's all.

It would've been a 8 but...

The film was decent up until the last 20 minutes... The movie felt a little slow at times, the gore was actually quite convincing looking, and it had moments of comedy whether intentional or not, i thought it was tasteful without being over the top. I have to agree the movie felt, at times, similar to evil dead...Though the possession/exorcist trope is very prevalent within the horror movie genre, one thing i can admit i liked was that this films method of exorcism was...different, to say the least, it was comical at times to see that a priests go to exorcism method being to beat the cr*p out of the possessed person. My main and truly only issue with this movie was the p*dophilia, which was unnecessary. I get with some possession movies the possessed displays some kind of perversion but this was honestly just disgusting. I almost stopped watching the movie because of it. I do wish I had read some reviews before watching the movie because that's just not my cup of tea. All in all the movie fell a bit short for me, and it wasn't anything I would necessarily recommend for your next horror movie night.

Falls well short of being a GOOD Demon Possession horror!

For the record, I'm seeing what looks like, tons of fake reviews, some going so far as saying those that didn't like it is due to culture being "lost" for certain audiences, I strongly disagree as I am of Latin descent and speak fluent Spanish, so nothing was lost in translation here. I figure I'd chime in with a quick review of PROS and CONS of this movie. PROS: Its has the dark atmosphere nailed and at times can be genuinely creepy. The actors are great and the acting is good enough to keep you invested in the characters, especially Priest Menendez himself. CONS: A weak story that could've been told in a 30 minute anthology series. The movie takes itself WAY too seriously given the material and, certain...situations...presented later in the film. Some of the dialogue is downright laughable! Also didn't know a good old fashioned beat down was part of the exorcism ritual, but here it is, unnecessarily brutal and long. As far as exorcism films, this isn't the worst (I hate how the term "worst movie ever" gets thrown around so easily), but there's also plenty better out there. If you need a quick 90 minute possession horror film, I strongly recommend the superior Mexican/Venezuelan production, "The Exorcism of God (2021)".
