A modern fairy tale floating somewhere between whimsy and wobble

Mathias Malzieu is a clever man. He writes a book. When not enough people read it, he turns it into an album with Dionysos. When not enough people listen to that, he mixes the two and makes a film. One shudders at the thought of Bernard Werber, fellow member of the League de l'Imaginaire, attempting the same manoeuvre.The opening minutes go badly wrong: the actors seem unsure of the tone, and Malzieu appears better suited to animation, à la Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart. Then it clicks - this is a modern fairy tale - and the film's wavering register starts to feel like part of the deal.Mermaid in Paris is an interspecies love story. It sounds a bit dodgy when you put it like that, but I promise it isn't, and you'll either find this childlike romance between a broken-hearted singer and a lethal-but-accidental mermaid utterly adorable... or unbearably daft.The songs are kept discreet, but Malzieu once again indulges in his vision of an eternal Paris - fairy lights along the Seine, chic and tacky in equal measure - a look we've arguably had our fill of since the heyday of Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Still, his obsession with vintage objects and frantic exo-nostalgia lend the film a small personal touch, and at this point, we'll take it.

Stylish but vapid

Very different

I watched this movie resisting the temptations to check the reviews before .

I was curious what score it would get.

Surprised to see it's rated at 5.7 I guess This is a movie not for everyone's cup of tea.

Personally, I liked it because it's very different to other fantasy movies. It's a potential cult movie .

However, the story is developing a little slow.

On the other hand, casting is very good.

Music, décors are wonderful.

I guess to enjoy this movie, you need to look into your inner romantic side and feel for "Gaspard" who is falling in love with this beautiful mermaid.

Impossible love?

Most of the outdoor scenes are at night which gives a special character to the story.
