A real disappointment

So desperately tries to be Agatha Christie but fails dismally. The acting is wooden. The dialogue terrible. Micha Barton sounds like she's reading the words off of a piece of card. Her accent was like the terrible ones Americans have been doing for decades. I almost forgot she was British. The only positive was it is only 1hr 23mins.

Enjoyable fluff.

Miranda Green is invited to dinner by the British Ambassadors in Egypt. Guests include a journalist, the ambassador's daughter, and a famous actress. That night, a murder occurs at the embassy, and Miranda is called in.It took me about half an hour to recall 'An Invitation to a Murder', from a few years ago. I quite liked it, and I felt the same here-another amiable whodunnit, not too taxing or complex, but visually quite appealing.Cairo is presented almost like a city under lockdown; the streets are eerily empty, which felt a little off. I did, however, enjoy the music-it definitely added to the atmosphere.Helena Rubenstein had some truly bizarre beauty ideas; I know the Victorians used to smear raw meat on their faces.Mischa Barton's accent did grate on me a little-it's like a Brit trying to put on a telephone voice. Mrs. Slocombe used to do it in Are You Being Served?, and I got the same vibes here. What can you say? Cosy, fluffy, stylish, aimed at those of us who miss the Christmas Agatha Christie. Likeable, but flawed, and a little too straightforward.6/10.

Lovely film. Not every mystery needs be cerebrally challenging, and so, this film was a refreshing change from an intense murder mystery. It reminded me of an Elizabeth Peters novel - an easy mystery read with a strong female lead. It was enjoyable and entertaining. Lovely costumes and sets (although the streets of Cairo were far to clean to be believable). But that added to the enjoyment of a film that doesn't pretend to be an intense edge of your seat production.
